Lexie snuck out of the building after her shift. She told Mark she'd walk to the very back of the parking lot, where no one would see her. She looked around before getting in the passenger seat. "Go, go, go!" She said, hiding her face from the window.
"Oh, come on.. am I that bad?!" He asked, pulling out of the parking lot.
"Yes. If anybody sees me, my career is done for; over." She said, letting out a breath when they exited the hospital campus. "So.. where are we going? Unless you're just kidnapping me and this is part of the trip." She joked, mostly.
"Very funny." He rolled his eyes. "There's a nice Italian place on 3rd, as long as you like Italian food."
"How'd you know I liked Italian??" She asked, furrowing her brows. She loved Italian. In fact, she always went to an Italian restaurant for her birthday.
"I didn't." He chuckled. "But I'm glad you like it." It was quite an awkward ride to the restaurant. The two didn't know much about one another. Plus, they were coworkers, and Mark was higher up than her.
Lexie anxiously tapped her foot on the ground at their table. She was so nervous, and for what? He asked her. "So.. when did you get to Seattle Grace?" She asked.
"Actually, Derek Shepherd's mom practically raised me.." He caught her confused gaze. "Shitty parents." He shrugged. "Derek was all ready for medical school, so his mom convinced me to go too. Plastics was a random choice. I guess I can't get too attached and lose anybody so easily." He said.
Lexie listened closely. His whole 'hard' act was a total mask. He was a huge softie. "That's actually really smart. I really like peds, but it's going to be really hard to not get attached. I've been there for 3 weeks and I'm already attached to a bunch of the kids."
"I can barely go on the peds floor." He chuckled. He loved kids, and seeing sick kids everywhere broke his heart. "What about you? Why did you go into surgery?"
"I've always wanted to, since I was like.. 3." She chuckled. "I graduated high school at 15, undergrad at 18, med school at 22, and here I am." She explained. "I just turned 23 a few months ago."
"Wow." He widened his eyes. "In less than ten years you're already interning. That's insane." He didn't know what he was more shocked about; her age or her impressiveness. She was going to go far. He knew it.
Lexie smiled, thanking the waiter when their food came. "Oh my God.. This is amazing. How did I not know of this place?!"
"It's my favorite. I had to bring you." He grinned, taking a bite of his food.
The two shared a couple of conversations, and a dessert, before it was getting late. They both knew they had early shifts tomorrow. Mark walked outside with her, his hand on her back. "I can take you back to the hospital, or to your place, or if you really don't want to worry about it you can come over to mine. I mean, it's a couch but-"
"No, no.. I'll go home. I can catch a cab tomorrow to work, no biggie." She said, walking towards his car. The ride home was even more awkward than the ride there. What was she supposed to say?
Mark walked her to the door once he parked. "I know you didn't really want to do this, but tonight was really nice."
Lexie smiled. "I can't lie. I had a great time too." It might've been awkward, but she couldn't deny she'd wanted this to happen all along. Before she could even think of what to say next, Mark was pulling her into a kiss. She couldn't think, so, she kissed back, putting her hands on his neck.
Their kiss lasted seconds, before Lexie pulled back. "I- I can't. I've- Bye!" She said, running inside. What the hell just happened?
