Now, this wasn't a fangirl screaming in joy, or someone screaming for fun. I could tell something was wrong the second I heard it. The scream was full of pain and terror.
"Help me! Somebody, please, help me!" echoed across the area.
More screams sounded and I turned to Maddie, her eyes reflecting the confusion and fear I had growing inside of me. We both knew something was wrong.
"Hey!" Mark called.
"Come back!"
Maddie and I turned, as one, to see Mark and Joey waving their arms frantically at us, trying to get our attention. Without a second thought, Maddie and I ran to them.
"What is that?" I asked
"I'm not sure, but something is wrong. We need to hide."
As he spoke, the lights went out. More screaming began to build inside the area and I froze for a moment. Then, a bright light flashed in front of me. A phone flashlight. Joey's face was outlined in the light.
"Come on!" he yelled.
He grabbed my hand. Shocked, I yelled back;
"What about the others?"
"Right here!" Maddie called and grabbed my hand.
Mark's outline from the light appeared beside Joey and together, we pushed our way to the doors, past screaming, terrified people. When we made it out, we ran to a sidewalk and caught our breath as we watched people streaming out from the doors.
I heard Mark call out to Toby and Aaron, or Yamimash, and Joey call out to Shane as they came streaming out from the building. Breathless, the three men joined us at the corner.
"What the fuck is happening?" I heard Shane ask.
"I'm not sure. Let's wait and see." Joey answered.
So we waited. Soon, Olga, Jack, Anthony, Ian, Greg, Lainey, Ryan, and Daniel all joined us on the sidewalk.
"What's going on?" I heard Jack ask.
"I don't know." I murmured as I watched the stream of people slow to almost nothing.
I was scared. What the hell was happening? If it had been a prank, then I would be having some serious words with the little fucker. I turned to the others, who were now huddled together on the sidewalk, talking in quiet, hushed murmurs. Maddie caught my eye and walked over to me.
"I think we should go back in." she said.
I stared at her, trying to keep my mouth from flopping open in shock. My best friend, my almost sister, wanted to go back into a place with no power? In the dark? Wow. I thought.
Maddie hated the dark, especially when it was a big room. That's why we never took her to haunted houses. She wouldn't be able to handle it. But now, she wanted to go back?
She stared right back.
"What? I can't be curious about what just happened?"
I blinked and then started to say something when Shane cut me off.
"I think we should go back. There may be some people who got lost. After all, the building is huge and it's easy to get lost."
Everyone else murmured reluctant agreement. I couldn't blame them. I sure as hell didn't want to go back, but the masses had decreed that we had to, and there was no arguing with the masses.
I trailed after the others, worry starting to nip at me. I didn't want to go back, but I was slightly interested about what had happened, so I stuck close to Maddie, and followed the others back into the dark building.
