I hear my room door slam and look up to the terrified look on my little sister; Indigo's face. " "What's wrong", I ask. "Dad's back and he's mad", she replies. "Isn't he always" , I state dryly. "Not like this, mum made him chicken for dinner instead of steak and his furious. He hit her so hard and she's on the floor crying", she replies. "Let's go", I say as I take her hand and rush downstairs to the dining where I see my mum on the floor, her hands on her cheeks with tears in her eyes and pieces of a broken plate around her. Dad is standing over her yelling with so much anger that he looks like his face is gonna burst. "Didn't I give you money to get me a steak for dinner and instead you give me this crap, what the hell is wrong with you", he yells. "I'm sorry, I needed the money to pay for Indigo's school trip, it's really important to her", she replies softly. " Did I tell you I give a f**k about your stupid daughters", he replies angrily. 'They're not stupid and they are your daughters too", she states a bit more defiantly.
He raises his hand to hit her again when I shout, " Don't you dare, if you hit her or us one more time I swear to God I'm gonna call the cops". "Are you threatening me, little girl?", he asks with an incredulous look on his face. "Take it as what you want, but you hit her again and I will call the cops", iI say. "Why am I not suprised, like mother like daughter, y'all are completely useless, clean this shit up and cook me a proper dinner", he says as he walks away.
After he leaves the room, Indigo and I help my mum up and clean up the mess. "I'm so sorry mum, its all my fault, if only I hadn't bothered you about the trip, you would have made dad steak for dinner and none of this would have happened", Indigo says as she rushes into my mum's arms with tears in her eyes. "No baby it's not, so don't blame yourself, you know your dad he will always find something to get mad at. I'm just happy it's me he took it out and not you or Violet. And you missy what were you thinking of talking to him like that he could have seriously hurt you ", she says while hugging Indigo and glaring at me. " I don't care, mum why do you put up with all of these, you and we deserve better than him", I state. "What am I gonna do, leave? I have no money, no university degree and pretty much no skill except being a mother and a wife, everything I have is in his name and you and Indigo need a good education and I can't afford that on my own", she says. "Anything has to be better than this" , I say. "Well, it isn't so hush up before he hears you and help me clean up", she says effectively ending the coversation.
But I can't stop thinking that there has to be a way out. This can't be all there is to life.
