Bethany
Her body was void of any strength. She sat on the bathroom floor her head leaning against the wall of the stall. Her breathing was coming quick and her head felt as if a million ants were walking inside.
"Bethany?" A coworker had entered the bathroom her voice calling out worried and timid.
Bethany peeled herself from the ground smoothing out her shirt and pulling down her skirt. Opening the door she gave the other girl smile. She held her stomach and told the girl "I think I have a stomach bug."
The girl's eyes grew big. "Maybe you should take off work today."
Bethany laughed and shook her head, telling the girl she would be fine. As she said those words she felt her heart constrict and an image of Joseph appeared before her eyes. It was him smiling at her. Bethany bit her lip trying to hold back the tears. Walking over to the sink she washed her hands and made her way out.
At her station Bethany felt suffocated. The small Minnie Mouse clock that sat on her desk was torture. Not only did time seem to go slower; but the clock was a reminder of Joseph.
Joseph had suddenly surprised her one day with the clock. This was before any thoughts of dating had occurred. His hands behind his back he had told her to pick a hand. First she had picked left, he gave a sneaky smile and brought his hand forward revealing an empty palm. He chuckled looking at Bethany's bottom lip stick out, pouting at her loss. Leaving his left hand by his side he told her to pick again. Bethany picked the right and saw her gift. She was at a loss for words. She had mentioned maybe once or twice in passing how Minnie Mouse was her favorite animated character.
Bethany was overjoyed. Not specifically because of the five dollar trinket, but because it showed he listened to her. The idea that this man actually heard her was overwhelming. She had looked up at him and thought 'only if he was single.'
Bethany's thoughts were brought back to the present with the rise of bile in her stomach. Pushing back her chair she hopped from her station and raced to the bathroom.
Bursting into the bathroom she opened the first door. Dropping to her knees the shock of the hard tile was buried under the profuse need to expel what was left in her stomach.
She heard the bathroom door swing open then looked up from her place on the floor to see her boss standing above her.
"I think you should go home, you can't work like this." He said grabbing her hand and yanking her off the floor.
Bethany nodded in agreement; she would not be able to accomplish anything today. Making her way to the employees lounge she collected her things and exited the building.
Getting in her car Bethany glanced at Joseph's parking spot and thought about the morning. She shook her head appalled that her mind had let her think the worst of Joseph.
Bethany was almost home when a strong need took her. At the next light she made a u-turn and continued on a different path. The drive seemed to take forever, but finally she had arrived at the park in the city over.
This was where they had their first date. Joseph had said he wanted their date to be romantic. He had prepared a picnic, with all the food and even a checkered blanket. Bethany had felt like a princess basking in the attention he was giving her.
Bethany sat in her car watching as clouds rolled over the park. Soon her memories would be surrounded in bleakness just like the park.
Bethany was reaching to turn the key in the ignition when she heard her phone ping. She dug in her purse as a flash of lightning streaked across the sky. Pulling out her phone thunder shook her car. She looked down at the notification and saw a number she didn't recognize .
Opening the message Bethany read it and her mind began to tumble. Her breathing quicker and her heart faster.
"You killed him."
