prologue (the enchantress)

spring 2020. east high. salt lake city, utah. the chorus room. just after lunch.

miss jenn walks into the room.

miss jenn: "who here is ready for the spring musical?"

carlos: "oh. my. god. this is the most exciting announcement i have ever had the opportunity to share!"

seb: "oh no. we're doing cats, aren't we?"

miss jenn: "not exactly! buuuuut, there will be a cat like creature in this production."

carlos: "any last guesses?"

gina raises her hand.

carlos: "yes, gina?"

gina: "seussical?"

ej laughs maniacally.

gina: "what? i find the use of dr. seuss in a show to be cute and exciting, you know."

ej: "my bad, i wouldn't want to make you mad."

gina rolls her eyes.

carlos straightens his posture.

carlos: "ahem. it is my pleasure to announce that east high's spring musical is..."

the drama club stares at him blankly.

kourtney walks in.

miss jenn: "kourtney, you're late!"

kourtney: "i am so sorry! did you tell them about beauty and the beast yet?"

carlos: "come on! i was just about to announce it!"

carlos whines.

seb goes over to carlos to comfort him.

nini: "maybe this time i'll get to play a real person!"

ricky: "i want to play lumiere, he has a french accent! i love france."

nini kisses ricky to get him to stop talking.

ricky smiles.

ashlyn: "this is going to be so much fun, i love beauty and the beast! i saw it six times when i went to new york for a week in the third grade."

ej: "she did. actually, so did i."

ashlyn: "yeah, and you cried so hard when the beast growled at belle that grandma had to take you outside. every time."

ej: "i was young!"

ashlyn: "you were eleven."

ej rolls his eyes.

mr. mazzara and big red enter the room with a cart and a small child.

mr. mazzara: "this is my nephew, charlie. he's going to be playing chip."

big red: "and this, my friends, is chip."

big red leans on the cart, knocking it on its side.

miss jenn: "okay, then! you're all dismissed, auditions are next tuesday in the auditorium. the suggested songs list is on the bulletin board in the cafeteria."

ricky and nini squeal in unison and hug.

kourtney: "nah uh. none of that pda stuff, i just had lunch."

they laugh.

gina looks at ashlyn.

ashlyn: "i'm sorry, gina. i know how you feel."

gina: "no, you don't. you have red. i'm just, me."

big red: "did someone say my name? i was thinking about what i want for dinner."

ashlyn: "always food with this guy."

she laughs.

big red: "you're my favorite snack, ash."

gina pretends to gag.

they walk out of the chorus room together.

ej's the only one left in the room, watching as his cousin and her boyfriend leave with gina.

he sighs.

ej: "ugh."

he walks away with his head facing the floor.
