Monday. First day of class. Great. Mackenzie stretched her hand out, reaching for her phone to check the time. 5 a.m. She didn't have to be up for another hour, but she was too anxious to go back to sleep so she stood up and headed for the bathroom. Auro was still asleep so Mackenzie moved slowly. Once she reached the bathroom, she closed the door and turned the shower on. As she waited for the water to warm up, she began to undress. She took her pants off and there they were. The scars of her secret vice. The lines across her thigh. She slowly ran her finger across her skin, reliving every moment as she touched each scar. She had decided that she wasn't going to bring this bullshit to college with her but it was hard to avoid when it was staring her in the face. She looked in the mirror, took a deep breath and got into the shower, pushing the dark memories away from her mind. She had a big day ahead of her. She needed to focus.
After Mackenzie finished her shower, she grabbed a floral shirt, black pants, a gray blazer, and black heels. She threw her hair up into a messy bun, grabbed her backpack and headed out.
Once she reached the law building, she felt pure excitement. This was the first day of the rest of her life. She pulled out her campus map to locate her first class when she heard a group of people approaching. She lifted her head to see what was going on. She saw a group of girls talking to a boy. No, not a boy, the boy. Adam. She gulped, remembering what had happened yesterday at the pool. She didn't want to embarrass herself again so she decided to avoid him at all costs. She watched as the girls stared at him, asking him how his break went, asking him if he was single, all that shit. As Mackenzie watched, she couldn't help but feel like the girls were interrogating Adam. What was it about him that attracted so many people? Sure, he was attractive, but he didn't seem very nice. Either way, she was not looking forward to talking to him again and she hoped she never had to.
Mackenzie entered the classroom for her first class. The classroom was huge! She couldn't wait to expand her knowledge on law as a whole. She had always been smart, but she thrived when it came to law. It was her passion, after all. She found a desk in the front of the room and set her backpack down. As she pulled her laptop out of her bag, he walked in. Adam. She noticed that he was alone now. He looked more relaxed without the group behind him. He walked towards the back of the class and took a seat. Mackenzie pondered how someone like him could be interested in the law, but she tried not to judge him too much considering she had only met him once. She took her seat and waited for the class to start.
Mackenzie's first class was pretty usual for a first day. What's your name? Why are you here? What do you hope to get out of this class? Blah blah blah. She felt pretty confident with the class schedule. While the other students were doing introductions, Mackenzie started planning out her semester. She figured the coursework would be challenging but she was excited to get started. At the end of class, she packed up her stuff and headed towards the door. She was checking her phone while walking out of the class. Three texts. One from mom, two from Auro. She began reading the message from mom when all of a sudden, she ran into someone.
"Oh shit, I'm so-" Mackenzie started to apologize when she looked up.
It was Adam.
"Mackenzie, right?" Adam said, making eye contact with Mackenzie.
"Uh...yeah." Mackenzie replied, stunned that he remembered her name.
"You should get off your phone when you're walking. You might end up hurting someone." Adam said, adjusting his briefcase strap.
"You're right. I didn't hurt you...did I?" Mackenzie agreed, putting her phone away.
Adam looked her up and down, chuckled, and replied, "You couldn't hurt me if you tried."
