Bangerous Era
A cool California breeze hit your face as you rolled your window down a notch more, a few loose tendrils tumbling out of your French braid. You'd been driving since early daylight hours and the thick heat had yet to get to you, the radio hummed in the background and the warm sun-kissed your skin.
It was the perfect situation for joyriding, but you had a set destination that you secretly, deeply dreaded.
You and small son were headed to ex-husband's estate for a family gathering for a few days and you couldn't be less enthused.
You'd been freshly divorced from your very famous ex-husband, Michael Jackson, for the past six months and both of you still had a lot of residual feelings and conflicts to overcome, making for a very awkward situation.
Your marriage had been stable and blissful for nearly two years before the foundation began to shake. Your problems had started when you fell pregnant while Michael was touring. It was very difficult not having him there during such a momentous part of your lives, but insult was added to injury when rumors of infinities on the road swirled in the press.
Feeling angry, neglected and betrayed, you didn't even think twice to file for divorce.
Michael denied the allegations of cheating and begged you to reconsider but you'd already closed your heart and mind and there was nothing anyone could say or do to stop you. Your son, Jonah, had been newly born and this time and after a long custody dispute, you'd settled on sharing joint physical custody, allowing him to equally split his time between the two of you.
The divorce had yet to fully hit you. You'd moved out of Neverland to a loft in Calabasas and were doing pretty well for yourself and your son but there were rare days when you couldn't help but think what could have been if you were still happily married.
A sigh escaped you as you spotted the gold lettering of Neverland's gates glistening in the distance. Jonah wiggled and clapped happily from the back seat.
"Daddy place!" the two-year-old squealed.
You couldn't help but giggle at his excitement.
"Yes, we're going to see Daddy today, sweets," you reply.
You perched your sunglasses on top of your head as you rolled up to the security.
"Mrs. Jackson," the personnel greets. "welcome back."
You flash a polite smile.
"Please, it's Ms. But I'd love it more if you called me Y/N."
"Sorry," he speaks. "Old habits are hard to break. Come right through, Y/N."
You roll your car up to the driveway of the main house, a team of staff along with Michael are standing at the steps waiting for your arrival.
"Geeze. How did I ever put up with all this fuss?" you mumble under your breath as you retrieve Jonah out of his car seat.
"Daddy!" your son, fastened to your hip shouts at the sight of his father.
Michael flashes his perfect smile, the corner of his eyes crinkling, and his arms already stretched to receive his son. Despite Jonah being born while Michael was touring the world, he knew who his father was and loved him dearly. In the past two years, Michael had made every effort to be there for his son and make up for any lost time in his development he may have missed.
Despite things not being completely amicable between you and Michael, you had to admit he was a great father and you loved watching him interact with Jonah.
