Thriller Era

Anonymously requested. Hope you enjoy!

You hummed to yourself, pleased with the pleasant aroma of cooking vegetables in the pot, imagining your husband's handsome face when he arrived home to dinner.

You'd been cooking all afternoon, waiting for your husband Michael to arrive home from work. You did some tidying around the house and sorting the mail that had accumulated in your mailbox. A letter from your cousin had arrived, filling you in on the last few months of her senior year of high school. The two of you were close despite your age difference and you'd been sad when she moved to Texas some years ago. You often caught up and she sent you photographs. This letter's photograph landed perfectly on the kitchen counter, a snapshot from her prom.

You eye the picture, longingly staring at the pale pink dress, as soft and puffy looking as cotton candy. A handsome teenaged boy wraps his arms around her, wearing a matching pink tie, a vision of a teenage dream.

You run a hand over the glossy Polaroid with a sigh, suddenly discouraged that you haven't such a memory to reflect on.

Although you're not much older than the girl in the picture, Although you are not much older than the girl in the picture, you suddenly feel twice your age, yearning for a slice of youth you'd never tasted.

With another sigh, you snap the picture onto the refrigerator, along with your growing family snapshots and proceed to finish setting the table.

"Honey, I'm home!" Your husband chirps melodiously as the door closes behind him.

You giggle as you place a plate of cornbread in the center of the table soon feeling a pair of long arms around your waist. You spin around his embrace, greeting your handsome husband with an ardent kiss.

Michael smiles against your lips.

"It's still so fun to say that," he chuckles.

You and Michael had gotten married five months ago and were still very much in the honeymoon phase. Initially you'd moved into the Jackson family home, sharing Hayvenhurst with the rest of Michael's already large family.

Things were nice at first but both you and Michael quickly found yourselves feeling crowded and unable to properly experience the joys of newlywed bliss. About a month ago, Michael expressed the idea to move into a townhouse for the sake of your own privacy and you couldn't be happier. You deeply enjoyed playing your role of a wife, cooking for him and performing other domestic duties under a roof you could call your own.

"I love it when you say it," you grin. "How was your day?"

You move to cut the burner of the stove, giggling as Michael gives your backside a swift swat on his way to the refrigerator.

"Nothing extraordinary," he replies, retrieving a pitcher of iced tea. "I finally got my take complete,"

You dish the hot okra and tomatoes onto two plates as your husband comes to join you at the table.

"I can't wait to hear it," you reply, placing a plate in front of Michael. "I made you a nice hot vegetarian meal. I know you haven't eaten much today."

You plant yourself in front of him, spreading a napkin over your lap as you reach for a piece of cornbread.

"Somebody brought pizza to the session," Michael replies, poking a tomato on his plate.

You roll your eyes with a grin. He'd picked up a vegetarian diet short after you'd gotten married but was not exactly crazy about vegetables. If you let him feed himself, he'd eat bread alone.
