My best friend in the whole world linked her arm through mine as we approached our lecture hall. Callista always had that touchy, friendly way about her. She just couldn't help it. We could go grocery shopping and she would want me to give her a piggy back the whole time or if I was having a rough day, she brought iced coffee. After the whole Grayson situation, she didn't leave my side for weeks. Callista would never let me hole up in my room.
What else could you ask for in a friend?
A friend that wouldn't mind her own business, but still. A good friend.
She was beautiful with pin straight, shoulder-length light blonde hair and blue eyes. I was always so jealous that not one of Callista's hairs was ever out of place or that her skin was a flawless porcelain while I was here looking like god took a paint brush and flicked it across my face in a fit.
"So, how's the cast?" She grinned cheekily at me. One thing about Callista that wasn't perfect? Her nosiness. "Does it itch?"
"Well, it fucking does now." I scrunched my nose, looking at my left arm in distaste. A burning feeling coming from the bone in my wrist that was aching to be put out. The simple cast was wrapped from my palm all the way up to my elbow.
"Here." She handed me a ruler and I stuffed it in between my cast and skin, itching furiously. "What about Grayson?"
I immediately paused before ripping the ruler out of the cast and throwing it on the floor.
"He was discharged last week." I hissed at the sad, downcast ruler on the ugly beige and while tile floor.
Grayson was banned from seeing me by his rich and wonderful parents. After the accident, he had been hospitalized for a broken spine and a lung transplant after his ribs had basically shredded one as they broke.
His parents had a very serious conversation with me. Usually, Richard and Sandra were the sweetest people to me, they loved and supported me but since the accident.... To them, it didn't matter that Grayson was drunk when it happened because I antagonized him. It may as well have been me behind the steering wheel. No matter how he was acting or treating me, it was almost an unspoken rule that I don't interrupt him when he is in a mood.
"I hate that he got hurt. This would be a completely different situation if I had just kept my mouth shut." I sighed, looking anywhere but at Callista as we continued our walk to a blue steel door that once we passed through we would be transported to hell- statistics.
"V, I swear to god, how many times do I have to tell you that that's a traumatic reaction? You're a psych major. You know this." She pursed her glossed lips and gave me that look only Callista could. "One day, Grayson will be a thing of the past!"
