"It is time" the guard told me. I knew what he meant, it was time for me to fight. I remembered what my great-grandfather told me. He said that the Olympic Games were not always as cruel as they are now. "Get up!". The guard kicked me to get me off the ground. I stood up."Here", I was handed gladius and a large, heavy shield. Next I was given a heavy helmet and told that my opponent was a retiarius. I prayed to Athena for guidance and silently cursed the roman who invented the fighting style of using a net and trident to fight. I walked out, onto the blood and sands of the arena. The cheering was loud, but I knew it was not for me. These people were cheering for blood. My blood. My opponent was already there. Silently, I prayed to Ares for strength and to Athena for wisdom. I reached my starting point and the horn sounded. The battle had begun. I slashed, blocked and stabbed, but I knew it was no use. I would eventually tire and then I would be killed. Just as I had the thought, I saw an opening in my opponents defense. I knew I had to take the chance. Risking it all, I slashed and my cold steel blade cut through skin, bone and muscle. The decapitated head and body fell to the ground. The crowd was silent, then the cheering started again. I had beaten my killer. I had earned the glory of the arena and the honor of my family name. I had won.
