Lucifer looked distraught at the sight before him; a six-year-old Sam and a 10-year-old Dean were in a fight about their father again and the older had walked out, disobeying his orders. It had been a solid three seconds before the six-year-old went into a ball and cried. Lucifer was angry at the sight of Sam crying, not because of Sam but because of Dean. Dean had upset his charge and it 'pissed him off' as these abominations say. But Sam was no abomination, no. He was a ball of light, brighter than himself. Lucifer made himself known gently. Going to Sam and scooping him up in his strong arms. "It's alright Sam. I'm here, I'll protect you."
Sam just didn't understand why their Dad wasn't home when he said he was. Dean had told him to stop asking questions, that his dad would come back when he came back, and that was that. But Sam had insisted, hated it when daddy lied to them and hated it even more when Dean got mad at him. Before Sam could beg or apologies - anything to keep Dean in the motel so he wouldn't be alone - his big brother was storming out of the motel and slamming the door, and that had been Sam's breaking point. He was just so tired, and angry, and sad, and worried, and scared, but he didn't have the vocabulary to express himself. It wasn't long before he felt himself being lifted off the ground, the familiarity of the presence bringing a sense of comfort and safety. Sam sobbed. His small arms cling to Lucifer's neck and his tiny hands balled the fabric of his shirt and he let himself cry. "It's not fair!" His outburst was slurred and muffled. "I just want daddy to come back! He said he would come back today!"
Lucifer sighed and held Sam close to him as he glared a little up at the ceiling, wondering if his own father was getting a kick out of this. "And he will come back. You just have to be patient, little one." The blonde smiled, kissing the child's head as he bounced him around, trying to get Sam to calm down. Starting to sing a lullaby he once sang when Gabriel was just a fledgling. "Deep in the meadow, under the willow..." He started off, hoping it would stop the tears. "But what if he didn't? What if something happened and he wouldn't come back." Sam asked as he wiped some tears away from his face listening to the song as he slowly calmed down.
Sam took a deep breath and so did Lucifer, "Sammy, he will be coming back, no matter how mad he can get at you and Dean. He wouldn't leave you and if he does, he doesn't deserve to be your father. One thing I can tell you little Sammy, I will never leave you, I love you like my own child. I will always be here for you Sammy" he said as he rocked him back and forth. The celestial being started to sing a lullaby he once sang when Gabriel was just a fledgling. "Deep in the meadow, under the willow..." He started off, hoping it would stop the tears.
But what if he didn't? What if something happened and he wouldn't come back. They wouldn't even know! "I don't want to be patient." The petulance in his voice was obvious, as he was beyond negotiating in his state. However, when the Archangel began to sing, that seemed to do something to Sam. His sobs and hiccups gradually decreased to soft whimpers and sniffles as he focused on listening to the deep, soothing voice. His breath was a little ragged, but he was surely falling silent, clinging onto the entity.
The celestial being sang softly, rubbing Sam's back and moving about the motel room, but once he walked back to the bed's the space turned into a giant playroom, full of toys that would make any child happy. This was kind of like Sam's personal heaven right now, but it would change over time as he got older. "So.. Do you want to play with toys or do you want to imagine made up animals again?" Lucifer asked, pulling Sam's face away from his shoulder so he could wipe stray tears away.
Sam was fully relaxed by the time the song was over, and simply basking in the strengths and protection surrounding him. Maybe Dean was meeting his guardian angel right now. Maybe... Maybe Dean wouldn't be so mad when he came back. Regardless, when he realized he wasn't in the playroom anymore, his eyes lit up, thoughts of Dean flying out the window as quickly as they'd come. He let the man wipe his tears, his eyes everywhere but on the being holding him. "Made up animals!" He exclaimed. Once upon a time, the very first time, actually, that Lucifer had taken him somewhere else, he'd gotten scared. But now... now he knew Lucifer would never let him get hurt. "Please? If... if it's okay."
Lucifer smiled down at his charge fondly, as he nodded. "Anything and everything is okay, Sam." He took the child to a blank white wall in the playroom, sitting down facing the wall in his lap, he had to smile at the down at the boy. He remembered the first time he had made himself known, Sam was just a three-year-old baby and had cried when he saw the archangel so loud it had woken up John. Who in return shot at Lucifer to scare him off and away from Sam. "What are we going to make up this time?"
Sam leaned back comfortably into Lucifer's chest when they sat down. He tilted his head back and looked up at him, giggling at the odd sight of the Archangel's smiling face upside down. When he was asked the question, he looked back to the wall and gave it a lot of thought. They'd done a lot of them already, had created many new species of animals. But there were a few animals he'd heard his talk mention in secret to someone on the phone, animals he'd never heard of before. "A rou-" He stopped to think of the word. "A rougarou and... and a bird! Ooh, with a turtle shell!"
That made Lucifer stop smiling. Who the hell would tell a child about one of his father's flawed creations. He didn't want Sam to see that side of the world, he had to constantly keep on shielding Sam from the flawed beings. But fair enough, before he could even stop the wall, it showed exactly what Sam had wanted to see. The archangel glared at the flawed abortion being shown to the young child and made it disappear, but Sam already saw it. "Anything else you want to see?"
The sight made Sam stop smiling as well, fear flashing through him at the scary look of the animal's face. He never wanted to see that again. Instinctively he cowered into Lucifer. Why would his dad talk about something as scary as that? Why had he never heard of that animal before he'd overheard him mention it? The only reason Sam remembered it was because of the way it sounded; it was easy to retain. Regardless, he was ready to move on. "A flamingo with... with a horse's body... and cat legs, and a... hat."
The wall showed what Sam wanted, and this time Lucifer had visibly relaxed. The arms that held the child when he was afraid became slack as he held the boy. He actually laughed at this one, and he thought of an elephant but with the body of a sheep and the legs of a rat to go along with Sam's wild-looking creature. But in the back of his mind, he had begun to wonder how Sam had even heard of the rougarou. He sighed, he needed to know so he could make Sam forget about it.
Sam burst into laughter at the sight of their creations, beyond amused. "Those legs can't hold him up!" He giggles, pointing at the rat legs he could barely see. It was disproportionate, but that's what made it so funny, it's what made it his favorite game to play. When Lucifer sighed, however, his smile faltered and he tilted his head back to look up at him quizzically. "Are you okay?"
Lucifer had to turn Sam around to face him so that if he thought about it, the wall wouldn't show him the terrifying monster. "Sam, I need to know where you heard about that creature. I'm not trying to scare you, I just want to know who told you about it." He looked up past the top of the child's head and saw the beast, glaring at it once more before he looked back down at Sam.
"I-I didn't mean to hear, I swear!" Sam said quickly, afraid he was going to get reprimanded, picking up on the sense that maybe he shouldn't have heard of that creature. "I... It was late and I woke up because I had a nightmare again, a-and I wanted to see my dad. But he was on the phone and-and I heard him talking about it. I pinky promise that's all!"
"It's ok Sam. It's just that... This world is filled with horrible beings that want to hurt others. I've been trying so hard not to let you see that side of it. I want you to see the good side of the world. The not scary parts of it but every time I try, your brother and your dad want to drag you back in." Lucifer took Sam in his arms again, and with a kiss, to his forehead, they were back in the motel room.
Why... Why would anyone want to hurt others? The question rang heavy in Sam's head as he was brought back to the motel room. Saddened at the prospect of leaving the best place ever, back with an angry Dean and absent John. It was lonely. Sam was lonely here. The thought brought unshod tears to his eyes, but he quickly wiped them with the collar of his - well, Dean's, shirt - so Lucifer wouldn't see him cry again. "Do you... Do you have to leave now?" Sam asked as he had teary eyes forming. Lucifer didn't want to but he knew it was the best option, he didn't want to get caught by Dean again or John for sure, he knew he couldn't risk Dean catching him anymore and if John did then it would not be good at all. Lucifer looked at Sammy and grazed his hand on Sam's cheek before he flew away.
