Levi's POV
"So you finally convinced someone to adopt you, huh?" The grumpy receptionist looked at the little girl beside me in disgust. She just gripped my hand tighter and hid behind me.
"You shouldn't talk to a child like th-" I began to say.
"Just sign these papers and we'll perform a background check within a week." She plopped a stack of papers in front of me. I was taking a walk outside when I passed by an orphanage I didn't even know was here. There was a girl around the age of seven getting pushed and teased by other kids. I scared them off and the little girl hasn't let go of my hand since. I know it's sudden, but I just feel like this girl needs me, and I need her.
"Tch." I grabbed the papers and headed for the door. The little girl, (Y/N), pulled on my hand.
"I'll be back next week, okay?" I crouched down to her level. She looked at me worried before nodding and giving me a hug, then running up the stairs. I subconsciously smiled to myself and headed out the door.

Throughout the next week, I worked hard at getting (Y/N)'s room ready and getting her enrolled in school. To be honest, I was kind of happy to have her around, but I was also really nervous. She's obviously probably been through trauma growing up in the orphanage, what if I just make if worse?
"Okay, off you go." The rude receptionist sneered as (Y/N) ran into my arms. Today was the day I'd be bringing her home.
"You ready?" I asked as I picked her up. She nodded and held onto me tightly. After a short drive, we eventually arrived at my house. I showed her everything and her room. The whole time she was really quiet, but she was always smiling and nodding her head 'yes' or 'no.'
That night she insisted on sleeping with me in my bed. I relaxed and stroked her soft hair. She put her middle and ring finger down onto her palm and shook her small hand. (Sign-language for "I love you.") I didn't know what the gesture meant, but I smiled and did it back. She smiled brightly before quickly falling asleep on my chest.

The next few days were fun but also a little irritating. I took off work to spend time with (Y/N), but it was hard because she refused to talk to me. I mean, I don't think I've done anything to upset her, so I don't know why she's been ignoring me this whole time.
I sighed as we sat at the table to eat dinner. (Y/N) looked at me concerned and did a little hand gesture ("Are you okay, Daddy?") I shook my head and tried once more with her. "So are you excited for school soon?" I asked.
She looked down at the table, seeming unsure of her answer. "You know what, if you're gonna be a brat, then you can just go to bed for the night." I finally said. Tears quickly filled her eyes as she raised her hands once more. "Stop that! Go." She stared at me before slowly getting up and going to her room. I sighed again as I held my head in my hands. Have I made a mistake?

I stared at the orphanage's sign for a good minute before going in. I loved (Y/N), I really did, but I wanted to know what was going on with her. The doorbell rang as I walked in and saw a nicer and younger-looking lady at the desk. "Hi, how can I help you?" She smiled. I explained everything to her and she looked through the orphanage's records on her computer. "(Y/N)... She doesn't seem to have any social impairs. She's actually a very sweet girl. Umm..." She continued scrolling down. "Oh! She's um... she's mute."
"Mute? So... she can't talk at all?" I asked in surprise.
"Unfortunately, yes." She frowned. "She used to be bullied for it, and not a lot of people here knew sign language." Ohhh... how could I not have known that?
"I see, thank you." I walked out of the orphanage, still in a daze. She's mute... that's why she never talked. That must have been why she was being bullied that day. So she wasn't just being a brat after all...
Guilt filled me as I headed to my car. I stopped by a nearby café with a Wi-Fi signal to start learning sign language. It doesn't matter if she has an impediment, she's still my daughter, and I still love her.
After that I headed to the store to get her favorite stuffed animal and ice cream to make up for last night. I then picked her up from Hanji's. The ride home was silent, and I can't really blame her. I'd be mad at me, too. I mean, she's just a kid dealing with something like this.
As soon as we got home, I grabbed the store bag and led (Y/N) into the living room. Sitting her down on the couch, I took a deep breath before attempting to do the sign language I had just learned a hour before. ("I'm really sorry. Nobody told me you were mute. I didn't mean anything I said last night. Will this make up for it?") Her eyes widened as she recognized the sign language and hugged the stuffed animal.
("Of course, Daddy.") She signed to me. I smiled and picked her up. I embraced my young daughter as I was thankful that I was able meet and find her, even though it was completely unexpected. She pulled back from me and held up her hand, doing the now-familiar gesture that she did to me every morning and night. ("I love you.")
I smiled as I did the gesture back to her. ("I love you, too.")
