I stare at Michael in shock as he storms off - did I really take his wife away from him? I scour my mind for any memory of this incident, but I come up short once again - I really don't remember anything.
Groaning I raise myself up from where I was lying and go off in search for the young leader, hoping that she might be able to enlighten me about my past further; it certainly doesn't seem like Michael is too keen to discuss my past with my right now.
"Hey, umm..." I say awkwardly as I approach the woman, realizing all too late that I don't know her name.
"Rachel," she says with a smile. "My name is Rachel. Were you looking for me?"
"Yes," I say, beginning to explain my situation to her. She nods her head in understanding and begins to fill in the gaps.
"You and Michael, you two have a history," she explains carefully. "From what I've heard, you and Michael used to be quite close friends; in fact, you were almost inseparable until about a year ago."
"What happened?" I ask with dread, certain that I was the one who destroyed our friendship.
"He cheated on his wife and stole yours."
I can feel my face turning red as the truth sets in. "That bastard!" I yell, storming off towards where I knew Michael would be laying. "He lied to me! He told me that I had cheated on my wife with his! That God damn bastard!"
Rachel catches my injured arm and I tell out in pain, seething with anger from the information I have just been given.
"Bruce," she says, forcing me to look at her. "Going over there and knocking him as senseless as you are won't do anything. Besides, you only have one arm."
"I should have just left him to rot in the shaft where I found him," I grumble. At least that way I would have been able to avoid confronting him about this now.
"No, you did the right thing by saving him. We need all the manpower we can get if we're going to get out of here, and, well," she gestures awkwardly to my injured arm, "you're not going to be too much help."
"What do you mean, I won't be much help?" I query, my anger now replaced by cynical curiosity. "Are you actually suggesting that we're going to get out of here? The elevator is totally destroyed, Rachel, there is no way out!"
"But there is, Bruce. There's lots of other exits out of this mine, we just have to get to them. And if worst comes to worst, we can blast our way out."
"How do you suggest we possibly find another exit if we don't know that another one exists?"
"Just because you don't remember everything, doesn't mean I don't. I've worked here as long as you have - ten years - and I know everything there is to know about this mine. All of the passages, all of the nooks and crannies, I know it all. We will get out of here, I promise."
I look at Rachel skeptically - how can she be so sure that we'll get out of here?
"Just trust me?" She says, as if reading my mind. "I'll get you outa here, we'll get you to a doctor and we'll get your memory back. How's that sound?"
I nod my head and follow her out to the centre of the chamber, watching in admiration as she gathers the rest of the miners, excluding Michael, around her.
"So, we're all aware that we need to escape from this mineshaft," she says to the crowd, who murmurs in agreement, "and I think I know how to do that. We all know that the Southern elevator is no longer an option, but there are other ways out. John, Rhett, Marcys", she points to three men in the front, "I want you guys to collect all of the mining equipment you can find. Lyra, Steph, James, I want you three women to collect all of the food and water you can find. We'll need food, otherwise we won't survive two days. Michael," she says, and I follow her hand to see Michael standing at the back of the group, "I want you to draw up a map of the tunnels and mark any possible ways out. As of tomorrow, we're getting out of here!"
