Valentine's

"Or maybe I could book a table at that new restaurant downtown?" ponders Clementine absentmindedly as she lazily stirs the straw through her lemonade. The bubbles in the ice-cold drink fizz as the motion disrupts the liquid.

"Why are you so worried about this Clem?" ask Louis calmly from the other side of the diner booth. "You know that whatever you decide to arrange, Violet will love it, because it will be with you. Saying that, Valentine's Day is tomorrow, you don't have too much time left to book anything."

Clementine nods and gazes out of the window. "It's just... this is our first Valentine's Day together, I want to make it special."

"It will be," replies Louis as a smile tugs at the corner of his mouth, "because you two are in love."

Clementine blushes, and Louis smirks as he traces the red hue that dusts the brunette's cheeks with colour. "We haven't actually said that to each other yet," she admits.

"No?" queries Louis, leaning back against the leather fabric of the booth. "But you two are so sweet together, I would have thought that word would have been out of the gate right away."

"I just.." mutters Clementine, faltering as she lowers her head and inhales deeply. "I know I love her; I just haven't found the right time to tell her."

Louis once more shows off his trademark grin, leaning his elbows on the table as he addresses his friend. "Well you never know," he says, "tomorrow could be the day."

Clementine looks away but smiles at the thought of declaring her feelings after suppressing them for so long. "Maybe you're right," she mumbles.

"I've got to head off," says Louis as he finishes his drink and gathers his bags. "You'll be alright tomorrow though Clem." He dips down to give her a quick hug, and she nods in return, going back to sipping her lemonade. She looks up to give him a small wave as the diner door softly closes, signifying his exit.

She finds herself staring into her lemonade, as if watching her fingers slide through the condensation of the glass will suddenly grant her an answer to her current predicament.

Valentine's day always seemed so simple when she was on the outside looking in. The single one, observing as people brought their significant others cards with cringe-worthy messages and tooth-rotting chocolates and drawings of dopey hearts. It should be simple.

She's known Violet for three years now, been through the ups and downs, seen her smiles and her tears, heard her sing and her laugh, which was like music in itself. Every time she looks at her, every detail in her face, from the green hue of her eyes and the peach of her lips, Clementine knows just how much she loves her.

Clementine brings the straw up to her lips, feeling the remains of the cool drink fizz down her throat, eyes scanning the diner. Couples occupy almost every table, in booths, faces inches from each other as they whisper flirty jokes and compliments, holding hands and heads on shoulders.

She's never really been able to be like that; so bold and open. Even though she acted it around her friends, with Violet she was timid, scared of making a mistake. She could barely muster up the courage to reach out and hold her hand when they were out with their friends. It was always Violet, kissing her without thought to who was watching, gripping her hand and swinging it between them, fighting anyone who had an issue with it.

And to Clementine, that boldness from Violet always made her felt so happy under the initial embarrassment of her actions being so public. It made her feel so whole and complete knowing that Violet loved her for her and not for any superficial reason like money or what she has. In a way, the brunette almost felt as though she didn't bring as much intimacy into the relationship as Violet would like and those insecurities play in her mind at random points. Which is exactly why Clementine was resolute in making this the best Valentine's day ever and making her Violet feel just as special as she made Clementine feel on a daily basis.
