Now Arwen was born in 1921 and Thomas was born in 1920. They started dating when Arwen was 15 and Thomas was 16. They were engaged to be married two years later. They got married on November 30, 1941. They went to Hawaii for their honeymoon the next day.
On the morning of December 7th, Thomas and Arwen went for walk on the beach just a few miles east of Pearl Harbor. As they were walking towards Pearl Harbor, Arwen looked out across the ocean because she loves looking at the ocean as it is so pretty. As she was looking, she noticed a bunch of battleships on the horizon.
She tapped Thomas' arm and said "Look over there! I think there's some battleships headed for Pearl Harbor."
Thomas looked at the ships and said "I wonder if they're friend or foe." He said this because they had heard about the big war that was going on in Europe but America wasn't involved yet.
"Perhaps we should go to the military base at the harbor and tell them about the ships in case they haven't seen them yet." said Arwen.
"Good idea!" said Thomas.
So, off they went to the Pearl Harbor military base. The men there were going about as though there weren't battleships headed their way. So Arwen and Thomas walked right up to the colonel's office and knocked on the door. The colonel's name was Colonel Rufus Sumter Bratton. He opened the door and was surprised to see two civilians on the base at his door.
"Umm... can I help you?" he said.
"Yes sir" said Arwen. "I believe there are some battleships headed this way. You should probably find out if they're friend or foe, considering the war going on in Europe. I know that America isn't involved yet, but there are battleships headed this way, so it would be a good idea to find who it is and hey they are headed this way."
Colonel Bratton was completely surprised by that information. He immediately asked, "Well, where did you see them?"
Arwen pointed out across the ocean, directly at the ships. Colonel Bratton immediately grabbed his binoculars and looked through them at the ships. What he saw completely surprised. He saw Japanese flags on the ships.
As soon as he saw that, he said, "Shit. That is not good."
"What is it, sir?" Thomas asked.
"Well, it appears that Japan has sent battleships to attack us." said the colonel.
"Oh no! That's not good." said Arwen.
"No, it's not ma'am." said Colonel Bratton. He turned and went into his office. He sat down and pressed the button on the loudspeaker system to tell the men at the base to prepare for an attack. The men were a bit surprised but did as they were told because they were taught to not question their orders and they knew about the war and suspected that America would get roped into it eventually like they did in the last world war about thirty years before.
