- Scarlet
Driving down this long empty highway is the most boring thing I've ever done. Okay, maybe that is a little bit of an exaggeration, but really, there are no sights to see, just rocks, rocks and more rocks.
I know I'm going above the speed limit, but honestly, I really just don't care. I have a best friend who is probably starving to death, and I feel like I will pass out soon from blood loss.
I look down at my shirt again.
Hannah will freak out when she sees this; she was so upset when I got a job with the FBI. She thought I would get hurt or killed. I assured her that I wouldn't. And well, look how that turned out.
I keep driving down the highway for a while until I see a detour sign. I almost miss it because it's so covered in mud; you can barely read it. When I look at it long enough I see what it says.
Bridge out.
Dangerously high water levels.
Take detour.
This place is weird. It seems like a desert in some places and then a while down the road, bam, it's flooded.
I sigh and turn onto the detour road. The tires stir up the mud on the road. Great, now it's going to take me even longer to get to the other town.
The road isn't used that much by what I can tell. It hasn't been fixed up in a while. It has potholes everywhere and they are all filled with water!
Finally, the old muddy road joins back into the main highway, faded pavement and more rocks. I speed along; happy that I'll be at the town soon.
Almost to the town, I catch a glimpse in my rearview mirror of a person flailing their arms around, running after my car just in front of me, a hitchhiker? No, it's Hannah! I scream and stop the car in the middle of the highway, jump out, and run towards her. The largest smile I've ever seen her with is spread across her face. I've found her. She's alive! She starts yelling to me. I can't make it out but she sounds so excited.
Then, I start to feel dizzy, the world starts to grow darker and darker, the sounds of Hannah's yells fade quieter, and quieter. And then, I fall. The world comes to a silent, black stop.
