IF you had asked me how it got to this, I'd have simply smiled, shake my head and said "it's fine, things like this happens all the time." When in fact, it doesn't. In what world does your best friend get married to the love of your life?
In what world does everything you've ever wanted vanish when it was just within your grasp?
I had given up on a lot things. The constant struggle to act like I'm fine when I'm not. The urge to show people that it doesn't hurt me when it does.
How did it ever get to this?
This is a question I've asked myself over a million times. I wish I hadn't smiled at him when he approached me the very first time. I wished I had turned and told him
"I don't give out my number to people I don't know. Please back off." Like I always do.But I had smiled and even gave him my number.
I smiled when he called me the very first time.Oh! Had I known!
Curious about this turn of events? This is my story.
The beginning and the end.
This is where it all began. My name is Amatullah Muhammad Elnas. I'm a 24 year old medical student. I study in the university of Canada. What else? I haven't always been a good storyteller but I'll try my best.
I came from a family of three. I, being the first born and the only girl had given my parents a lot of hope. They'd always called me their miracle child because it took seven years after marriage for my parents before I was born. I came when they had given up hope and then after that, my brothers came like they had been around the corner waiting.
The day I met Bilal Moddibo was on a Monday morning in the middle of winter. I had been in a hurry to not miss my class that I left my umbrella in my apartment without noticing the dark clouds.
I rushed into the campus and hurriedly rushed into class. To my surprise, the room was empty except for one person sitting at the far end of the class.
"Where is everybody?" I asked myself while pulling out my phone to call my best friend Nabeela.
"Did you not know the class was canceled because of the weather too?" He asked.
I looked up to see who was talking because I didn't notice when he walked up to me.
"Uhm yeah," I mumbled still fixated on my phone.
"That's a bummer because I was just told miss Ashley had announced the class wasn't holding almost two hours ago."
Two hours! I had been sleeping!
Nabeela still hasn't picked up and she was my only hope of not going home drenched in water today.
"I didn't know she did. I must have missed the announcement," I said curtly.
"Yeah," he said.
By that time I had given up hope of Nabeela ever picking up the phone and was just absentmindedly going through my notes.
He spoke again.
"Are you a student of this department?" He said and I looked up at him to see if he was serious with what he had just asked.
"Okay I'm sorry, that's a really stupid thing to say." At least he's self aware.
I still didn't reply him when he attempted for the umpteenth time.
"I've just never seen you around is all," he said meekly.
"Yes, I'm a student of this department. This class to be precise," I replied while mentally kicking myself for adding the last part.
"Oh! What's your name again?"
I sighed.
"Amatullah."
I looked at him and saw him staring at me like he was waiting for me to tell him my government name.
Seeing that I made no attempt to do so, he said "I'll be leaving now, have a good day," he turned and started walking away. There's no way I'll be left alone in this huge class with such thunderstorms.
I quickly followed suit but wasn't in the same stride as him. The rain had started getting heavy when I dashed into a full sprint to make it under the shade.
It wa unbelievably cold and the rain was pouring so hard.
Minutes later, a car stopped right in front of me and kept honking at me.
Minutes later, he came out of the car sprinting towards me to avoid getting wet but he wasn't faster than rain and was immediately soaked.
"Are you waiting for someone to pick you up?" He asked.
I was skeptical of a total stranger asking me if I was expecting someone so I told him my best friend was on the way to pick me up.
The first thing that drew my attention to him was how he offered to wait with me, soaked in rain and shivering to death until someone came for me because it was dangerous for a 21 year old be alone when it was that dark.
I didn't know it was all a ruse. A measure he took to rope me in. If only I wasn't a fool in love, I'd have known he was too good to be true.
We were standing in complete silence when Nabeela called back and told me she was on her way to pick me up. We were still together when she arrived and when I turned to thank him for his generosity, he said,
"Maybe you should give me your number so I can confirm if you made it home safe,"
He didn't have to ask me twice.
I gladly gave it to him with a smile and dashed into Nabeela's car and met her with questioning eyes.
If only.
