❝The moon rose from the horizon, announcing the dawn of light across the world before the sun outshone it with its rays.❞

He's here

He's here. It was her first thought when she woke again, her nose picking up the scent and dragging her body through urges to get closer to him. Subconsciously on the bed, she determined that she had already gravitated towards the side where he was closest to. Her legs were dangling over the edge and everything.

She didn't wait for him to call her bluff, this time. Instead, she took her time rolling over and inching her eyes open so that she was staring at the ceiling, wincing as her eyes adjusted to the bright lights of the room.

"Morning, mate," his voice rumbled in greeting, his voice blessing her ears. He chuckled, and she could feel his gaze on her, watching her carefully.

She just glanced at him and nodded in response. That was the most he was getting out of her. Using her elbows, she eased herself up, her throat dry. She grabbed the water glass from the nightstand, suddenly thankful for the cool, soothing feeling that followed her gulps.

"I'd like to take you outside. Would you like that?" he asked, tilting his head. It was a wolf-like gesture, and he slightly showed his teeth while smiling. For a moment, his action reminded her of her father's toothy smirk that he liked to make when pretending to be a villain. It gave her flashbacks to when she and her sister were chased by him around the house, giggling.

The thought of her family hit her hard. She had no idea what had happened to them after she'd run. She could only hope that they made it out alive. Her expression betrayed nothing, but she could feel her eyes welling in silent protest.

Did she want to go anywhere with her mate? No, not in particular. However, the offer was tempting. She could feel her tightened muscles, every kink her neck, and every knot in her back. Running outside sounded almost too good to be true. She glanced at her injured ankle, pondering. Is it worth the risk?

She glanced back up at him, considering quickly as their eyes collided. Oh, what the hell.

"I'll come."

The two words seemed to make her mate slightly happier than he had been before, and he straightened up almost instantly. "Cool," he said quickly – then he looked slightly embarrassed for a second. That was cute. He was trying to play it off as though it didn't mean as much to him as it did.

Her lips twitched upwards, but she didn't dare let him know her emotions.

He pulled a face – it looked like it was at him and his thoughts, and who was she to judge – and the made his way over to her, arms outstretched. It took her a second to register what he was doing, and she backed away reflexively.

"No."

He froze, his fingers an inch away from curling underneath her thighs to pick her up. "Aren't you injured?"
