Jack sat quietly, facing the ocean, trying to ignore the littleuns playing around him. He didn't stir when he heard footsteps on the sand behind him.
Lily quietly sat next to the redhead boy. "Hey," she said softly, putting a hand on his shoulder, "Jack, you okay..?"
"Yeah," he muttered, his eyes not leaving the horizon, "Fine."
She hesitated. "What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing."
"You're thinking about something."
Jack turned his head to look at her. "I'm not thinking about anything. Or at all, really."
"I get that same look when I'm thinking." she insisted.
He sighed. "Just.." he hesitated, "Home. And my family."
Lily nodded. "I think about my family and my home too."
"... what if my parents are dead, Lily..?"
"I'm sure they're not."
"How can you be sure..?"
"If they're your parents, I'm almost positive they're okay." the blonde pat the boys hand a few times, looking out to the ocean. "You're strong and smart, Jack. I'm sure your parents are the same. I'm sure they're okay in America."
"I didn't think you had the capability to say nice things about me."
She rolled her eyes, "Just because I don't like you doesn't mean I can't say nice things about you. I can say nice things about everyone."
He pulled his legs in, "You don't like Maurice, tell me something nice about him."
"I don't have a problem with Maurice!"
"Suuuure."
"You say something nice about me."
"What?"
Lily smiled, "I said something nice about you, now you say something nice about me."
"I like, er liked, the pink. In your hair, I mean." Jack pointed to her faded hair, "It suited you."
"What're you two doing?" a new voice interrupted.
Jack shifted to see him, "Shouldn't you be by the fire?"
"Harold'n'Robert's turn now."
"I'm gonna go see what Percy's crying about." Lily said, quickly standing and walking away. Jack cast a little glance after her. Maurice smirked.
"Oooh~" Lizzy teased as soon as Lily approached Percy. She and Garrett were walking from the direction of the meeting spot.
"Shut up, Lizzy," she stuck her tongue out, "You sleep on Garrett all the time and I say nothing, don't tease me because I decided to be nice to Jack once."
"Just be glad Annalise didn't see you instead," Garrett piped, "She'd be all over it."
"That is true."
Ashley locked her eyes on the kneeling boy. She'd been following him for a few minutes, and all he'd been doing was trekking through the jungle. Now, he had knelt down in a small open space, eyes closed and breathing steady. He's been sitting for five minutes. His dark hair fell over his closed eyes, his tan shoulders rising and falling with each breath. He looked peaceful. She almost didn't want to disturb him.
Almost.
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
Simon started, jumping to his feet and turning to face her. "Ashley!" he let out a sigh of relief, "Don't scare me like that! I thought you were Roger for a second.."
