A Million Words Unspoken

Chapter 1 - The Argument

It was Monday morning and as usual the school was buzzing with just about all the weekend gossip and stories about how the weekend was spent.

"The Ones" were the most popular group of girls in school with the school at their fingertips. They could get gossip from one person to the whole school in under ten minutes. As I walked past them I could hear that they were talking about Stephanie - one of my classmates - being rejected by Chad.

Chad was the most popular guy in school who did pretty much everything. From football to swimming to even book club, he did it all. Pretty much every girl was either crushing on him or they had crushed on him before----

My thoughts were interrupted when I noticed Haley sitting at her desk with an unusual, thoughtful facial expression. Usually she waits for me by the lockers but here she is in the class sitting alone. So I quickly walked up to her.

"Morning Haley, what's up?"

"Heyy, nothing really"

"What's wrong? You look like your mind is somewhere else."

She quickly plastered a smile onto her face - a smile that wasn't fooling me - and replied,

"I was just thinking about the week ahead."

I knew she was lying, this is the girl I've known since we were 7 and I wasn't believing her. I didn't want to pressure her, but I needed to know.

"Haley, you know I don't believe you right? You never ever have that expression and I'm your best friend. You know you can tell me anything right?

"Okay, Jen, you caught me but I can't tell you."

"Why not? We promised each other we would tell each other everything, but you seem to have forgotten."

"Jennifer, can you please just back off for one second!"

"Back off? Are you even listening to yourself? Since when do I back off if something is bothering my friend?"

"Can we just drop this?"

"Haley, promise to tell me?"

"Ugggh"

So she stood up and stormed into the opposite direction.

"What just happened?" I silently asked myself.
