I woke up feeling like I hadn't slept at all. I sighed. I returned my team to their Pokéballs and checked out of the Pokémon Center. I thought about what I was going to do from there. I decided the most logical thing was to return home. I wondered how my mom was going to react when she saw me, she'd probably describe me as a shell of my former self.

After Dodrio touched down in front of my house, I breathed in. I smelled the Pallet Town air, and exhaled. I was home.

As I entered, I noticed it was more quiet than usual.

I looked at the fridge and noticed a piece of paper with writing on it. It said, "Hi __________! If you are reading this, you came home! YAY!" I rolled my eyes and continued reading. "Anyway, I am writing this note to let you know that I won a trip to the Hoenn region and I'm going to be gone for a season. See you next February!"

I set the note on the counter. Well, I thought. Guess it's just me and my Pokémon for a very long time... I arched an eyebrow in distaste. I let my team out of their Pokéballs. Won't be using these for a while.

My team and I slowly became acclimated to life in the house. I would occasionally go out and find busy work to do, for instance, I bought supplies to groom my team. Well, Dodrio, Umbreon, Dewgong, and Arcanine, anyway. Nidoqueen and Magneton would sit and watch until I would finish with the brush and pick up a cloth. Unlike before, I was not wallowing in sorrow. Although, a day did not go by without me thinking of Green and Red.

I sat up in bed and yawned. Something was... different. I couldn't tell. Everything was the same, yet... Something seemed off. Maybe today was special in some way?

I glanced around my room. All my Pokémon were gone. I flung the covers off me and jumped out of bed, in a panic. My Pokémon always woke up after me. I pounded down the stairs, and when I reached the first floor, I squeaked in surprise.

"Happy birthday, __________!"

Before me stood none other than Green and Red!

I was speechless.

"Surprised to see us?" Green chuckled.

"Uh, yes," I responded, unable to think of anything else as I hugged the boys tightly. "I can't believe you guys are here... It's been so long! I guess you guys were always welcome... I'm so sorry that I never contacted you."

"Well, we haven't seen each other since we parted ways, and we still feel bad about it. It's my fault... Anyway, we heard that you beat Kanto's champion but didn't take the title."

Red was silent, his somber expression making me worried that he was upset with me.

"Yeah, I thought that being the greatest trainer in Kanto was my ultimate goal, but... I can't imagine not being able to see more of the world."

Green smiled brightly, nodding. "I'm so happy to hear that, __________! We should travel together again, us separating was a mistake..."

Happy tears were filling my eyes... My life was coming right back together! But... I looked at Red with concern.

"Don't worry about Red," Green said, "He just missed you."

He was fidgeting, looking at me... Bashfully?

"Oh hey, speaking of Red..." Green said in a hushed voice. "I have some, uh, errands to run, so I'll just, uh... Leave you two alone." He winked at me.

I glared at him. Thanks, Green.

"Well, see ya around," Green said as he left my house.

Red slowly made his way over to me as I stared at the door.

"Sorry," he mumbled.

"For what?"

He was silent again, thinking. "For being so awkward."

I rolled my eyes. "Whatever, it's fine. It has been a really long time..."

"I... I wish we could have shared our entire Kanto journey. We missed you so much."

"Well... What we did have was really great, right? I thought about you guys the whole time, so in a way you were always with me."

"That is so corny. You know, my Pokémon missed you, too."

I was relieved to see Red acting more like his old self. "Aww," I responded, "why don't you let them out of their balls?"

Red did so, and released his team, who immediately tackled me to the ground, making a lot of noise as they did so.

After they finally got off of me, I noticed that his team was fully evolved. Golduck, Fearow, Sandslash, and... Red's Eevee had evolved into a beautiful Espeon, who Umbreon seemed to be taking quite an interest in.

"Aww," I cooed, fawning over the pair.

"I think Umbreon and Espeon like each other."

"How cute," I remarked.

Red looked at me and sighed.

"Penny for your thoughts?" I said with a smirk.

Red's deep brown eyes stared into mine. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips. He shrugged, looking away with a blush.

At that moment, Green burst in. "Hey, you two lovebirds." He ruffled my hair and knocked Red's hat off and put it back on backwards.

My cheeks flushed to match Red's. "Green!" I shouted, exasperated. "Nothing happened," I mumbled at him.

He rolled his eyes. "You two. I heard they're building a contest hall in Vermilion City! We should go check it out."

I nodded enthusiastically and Red followed suit. "Heck yeah!"

On to new adventures, I thought, sighing contentedly as I put my team back into their balls and headed out with my best friends.
