Mistress V, here to offer you a few lessons on writing sex.
Everything I say here is my own trail and error and may not apply to everyone. However, I hope the following lessons will help you to become better at writing sexual scenes.
To start off, everyone has a different idea of when sex starts. Some like to generalize what men and women prefer, however, it's not that straightforward.
If we generalize what men think, then sex is penetration. In his mind, sex starts when he enters her. For some, it begins with the hunt once they lay their eyes on someone, they find appealing.
For him, sex starts when she says yes.
If we generalize what women think, then sex starts as soon as she wants her chosen man. For some, it starts as soon as the man enters the room. She begins to pay attention to everything he does. Little things like the way he talks, and moves will call to her.
For her, sex starts when she decides to have sex.
However, not everyone falls into those categories. Some men think like the generalized women and visa versa for the women. It depends on the individual or, in this case, your characters. Their personalities and choices determine how they pursue their sexual journey.
In their journeys, there will be buildup and anticipation. Seduction takes two and you can't seduce someone that doesn't want to be seduced.
When you're writing a scene, you'll need to identify the points of when both parities wish to do the deed.
When the woman thinks, "I'm going to make love to this man."
That is, when sex starts. Start the build up and make your way to the bedroom.
As the reader we know what's going to happen, but we want to be shown how the couple gets there. How they get naked is more important than them actually being naked.
Show us and you're off to an excellent start.
Tell us in the comments whether you knew this or not, and if this lesson was helpful.
Here is an optional challenge. In the comment section of this chapter, write a short scene of your character(s) deciding when they want to have sex. Or you can link us to your EBC lesson and challenge book, and show us examples using screenshots, of the times you used them correctly in your novels.
