Chapter Two

Okay, only one person had read this, and i would enjoy your feedback. Good or bad. I'd like to know how I'm doing. Thanks for reading!!!!

I think that almost every person knows who I am, because as soon as my name is called everyone shifts to make a path to the stage for me. I glance back at my friends. Penny's eyes are wide, Twine seems to have spaced out, Lacey's eyes tear up, and Bobbin's hands are bleeding from digging his nails so far into his skin. I know he's going to shout sooner or later.

I make my way to the stage as quickly as possible. I just need to get this over with. As always, when the escort asks for volunteers, the Square is dead silent except for the quiet weeping of Lacey. I force myself to space out, staring down at my shoes. Eventually I am ushered into the Justice Building to say my goodbyes. Dad and Stitch come first.

Stitch is only mesmerized by all the fancy things in the room. Dad sits down on a chair across from the couch I've positioned myself on. He stares at me like he's expecting me to say something. This lasts for most of our time. Right before the peacekeeper comes in, we have a short conversation.

"You can win," he says.

"You're just saying that."

"No, I'm really not. You can win."

I sigh. "I love you Dad."

"What am I going to do without you, my precious needle? Small and weak in most's eyes, yet powerfully painful when played with." He chuckles. "I love you too." He stands and sits beside me. And he does something I never would've expected. He begins to weave my hair into a long, dark, five-strand braid. He finishes as soon as a Peacekeeper ushers him out. I hug him, and I hug Stitch.

"Love you Buddy," I say. And then they're gone.

Next to come is my little group of friends. Except one person is missing. Twine, Lacey, and Penny sit beside me, squeezing onto the sofa.

"Where... where's Bobbin?" I ask.

Lacey looks at Penny, who looks at Twine, forcing him to answer. "He volunteered. He's with his family now." His hazel eyes gaze into mine. His beautiful, hazel eyes. Those beautiful eyes that I love. That I won't ever see again. And I'm crying.

"Oh, Mara." Penny uses my old nickname from grade school. "Don't cry now, please."

"I'll miss you guys." I get out.

"We'll miss you too." Twine says. Lacey is crying so hard now that Penny takes her out, which I have to admit I am grateful for. A moment alone with Twine is exactly what I need. He stares at me for a moment in the same way that Dad did.

"I love you." Those three words are what break me. I can't stop crying. I cry to the point of literally laughing, which I don't understand at all. Obviously Twine doesn't either, because he stares at me like I'm crazy. Which I probably am.

"I love you too." I tell him, and rest my head on his shoulder in silence until the same Peacekeeper takes him away from me. "I really, truly do." I say.

Okay, a bit of a longer chapter. Next time she'll be on the train, meeting her mentor and arriving at the Capitol. Hope you've enjoyed so far!

Also, am I the only one that laughed when Mariah's Dad called her a needle!? LOL!!!!
