Chapter 1: Frozen

Thud.

"Ouch!" Alicia hissed in pain as she rubbed her head trying to diminish the impact of the landing. The door to her room burst open, her mother eyeing her with concern.

"What happened?" She asked with a worried expression on her face.

Looking around frantically Alicia realized that it was just a dream. Relief coursed through her, exiting her in the form of a huff. Just then another thought took birth. What was that all about? Where had that come from? Some stupid horror movie, she guessed.

"Well, are you planning on telling me what shook the very earth?" Her mother asked, frustration and amusement etched onto her face because of her daughter's lack of a response.

"Nothing. Don't worry I slipped."

"Are you okay, honey? You seem to be shaking things up."

"Mum!" Was Alicia's grumble.

Mom repeated her question seriously.

"Yes."

By now Alicia was trying to get out of the tangle of sheets.

"Don't you have that party to attend?"

"Shit!" She yelled, earning a reprimanding look. "Sorry!"

An hour later, Alicia was standing in front of the mirror. A hot pink flattering dress, hair in a sleek ponytail and a face full of makeup to try and hide the zits; she was ready to go. Once she found her black flats, of course.

She met her mum downstairs, who raised her eyebrows mouthing 'someone's trying hard to impress'. Alicia just shook her head.

Pecking her mum on the cheek she was out the door. A red car appeared a few minutes later.

"Hey!" Trevor smiled.

"Hi." She gave him a small hug.

"You look gorgeous." He gave her another heart-melting smile.

"Thank you." Smiling and laughing was always on the cards when it came to Trevor.

"So, are you ready to hit the floor?"

"I've never been this ready in my entire life." She answered with a grin, and they zoomed off.

Trevor held her hand as they entered the open ground, where the party was on in full swing. The music was so loud Alicia swore that even New Year's Eve noises would be put to shame.

The setting was breathtaking. Whoever was throwing the bash had a pretty good taste in choosing locations was her thought. It was set near a large lake, with lots of greenery, the lake water so clear that we could see the reflection of the stars...well in short - stunning. There were lights on all the trees and bushes - just enough to see, but not too bright for party standards.

They spotted their friends at one corner and scurried towards them. Ashley, Alicia's friend hugged her.

"Wow, someone looks hot!" She said, grinning.

"You do too," Alicia took a good look at her.

"I'm going to get a drink, you coming?" Ashley asked. Shaking her head, Alicia nodded. Not like she was given a choice because Ashley had pulled her away even before she could answer.

They sat with their friends chatting about how good the party was for so some time, when Alicia felt Trevor nudge her mouthing a 'lets go'. She followed him wordlessly to the other side of the lake which was quiet and peaceful. They sat down at the edge, she glancing at the boy as if probing him to begin.

"I felt we should be alone, for some time," He explained, his cheeks flushing a little.

"You're right." Biting her lip she wondered what they would do here.

"I think we should go for a swim, what do you say?"

"Are you kidding me? Isn't it too late for that? Why do you want to go now?" The question was made with eyes wide.

"Oh come on,"

"No we'll catch a cold and end up with a fever." She told him sternly.

After a few minutes of arguing, she finally gave up as Trevor wouldn't take a no for an answer. As we got ready, she silently thanked the Lord that she had somehow managed to wear shorts before leaving.

The water was so cold that she was positive they wouldn't make it out without becoming human popsicles. Trevor just laughed when she voiced her thought and commented on her wild imagination. Alicia ignored the sarcasm and held onto him tightly as they went deeper. They were floating now, the depths too deep. Trevor made an abrupt halt and she shot him a confused look.

"Well, I had been waiting to do this for a long time" He said pulling her closer, as he snaked his arm around her waist.

Heart beating very hard she knew she was nervous and excited at the same time as she thought of the possibilities in her head. Was she finally going to get her first kiss? Her brain stopped thinking as he got closer to her, our breaths mixing.

"To do what?" She stuttered like a fool due to their closeness.

"This."

His lips were on hers. It took her a few seconds to react, then she put her hands around his neck and kissed him back with the same intensity. Her first kiss was a dream! A floating first kiss! She couldn't wait to tell Noah and Ashley about it.

After some time he pulled back and smiled at her.

"Now that was amazing,"

"Agreed," She was breathing heavily, "we should head back."

He nodded which came off as a bit odd to her as he never seemed to keep his thoughts to himself. She began to swim towards the shore but after a few minutes heard a muffled noise, turning back to see Trevor almost drowning, his hands waving frantically at her. She screamed Trevor's name and was rooted to the spot. Then life came into her feet forcing her to move, reaching the middle of the lake. Alicia was shaking as she tried her best to pull his body up but failed when saw the frozen, floating body of Trevor, his eyes which were usually warm now showed no emotion at all. Once again she screamed and this time it was even louder.

She watched, horrified as the paramedics pulled a very lifeless Trevor from the water and put his body onto the stretcher. She felt a hand around her and looked up to the ocean blue eyes of her best friend, Noah. She put my head onto his shoulder as he comforted her.

"It's okay, it is going be fine. Don't worry."

My eyes welled up and I began sobbing loudly. It didn't soothe her completely but it was enough for the time being. Upon reaching the hospital the doctors declared him dead. Lung collapse and then ice cold water drowning him they said.

Alicia couldn't believe her ears. The boy who had done nothing but make her feel happy was no longer breathing. No longer alive.

Dead.

Frozen.
