Five Kinds of Silence -Scene Two
Janet: Is he dead?!
Susan: He's stopped moving, Janet! (Mary comes in, bewildered.)
Janet: I'm frightened he's not dead!
Mary: What've you done Susan?!
Susan: We had to kill him, Mum!
Mary: Is he dead?! You shouldn't have done it! (Pause.) I should have done it.
Janet: He's moving! I can see him moving!
Susan: He's dead!
Janet: Give me the gun. Best be sure. (Susan reloads the rifle and hands it to Janet.)
Mary: Give it to me! I should do it.
Janet: No. No Mum! (She fires at his chest. He bucks and subsides. They all stare at him fearful that he might suddenly revive. Dead Billy's voice comes out of nowhere. They don't hear it as they watch his body for signs of life.)
Billy: (VO) No need to do it twice. I was dead the first time. Like shooting a dog in the kennel. They got me when I was down, see, I didn't stand a chance, bitches!
Janet: We should have done it years ago.
Mary: I'll call the police then, shall I?
Susan: We need a drink.
Janet: We'll drink his whisky! We'll drink all of it.
Mary: Later we'll get the police. (Susan gets whisky.) He looks nice like that. Lying there nice and still. I'm his red shirt.
Susan: it's blood. The shirt was white.
Mary: Still, he looks nice and neat. Nice and tidy. He'd be pleased. He never liked mess.
Janet: Why doesn't he close his eyes?!
Mary: D'you think he looks a bit surprised? (Susan hands out whisky.)
Susan: Drink. (They gulp it down in silence, the TV still tinkling in the background.)
Janet: Susan?!
Susan: What?
Janet: Is his eye flickering? Can you see it?!
Susan: He's dead!
Janet: Look! There, there!
Susan: We killed him! We had to do it! Nothing's flickering!
Janet: If he comes back to life I'll top myself. (Fade down lights on women. Bring up lights on Billy, still in his blood-stained shirt.)
