It was a rainy morning in March. Rainbow Steve was standing outside his house, waiting for the bus to come. He was listening to music through his hand-me-down headphones, and smiling brightly as the few raindrops that had gotten past his umbrella landed on his forehead. His foot tapped to the beat of his favorite song.
Rainbow felt his phone buzz inside his pocket. He took it out. It was a text from his mom. Stay safe, my little Rainbow! When you get home, I'll make you brownies. Have fun at school!
Rainbow smiled. His mom was amazing. Rain's dad had left the family when he was a baby, so he never knew who his father was. His mom was doing her best trying to raise Rainbow with a dead-end job as a waitress, but she was doing an amazing job. Plus, Rainbow was working too- doing little chores for their nice old neighbors.
He answered back with a kissy emoji and a funny meme before putting his phone back in his pocket and sighing. Things weren't the best right now for Rainbow, but everything would get better someday. He knew it would. Rainbow would grow up and get a good job and possibly get married to someone, and everything would be okay.
The bus pulled up to his driveway. Rainbow got in, and sat down in a window seat. The bus took off, and Rain opened his bookbag and took out his sketchbook and started to draw. He was amazing artist- or at least, that's what his friends told him- and he had never ever gone to an art class in his life.
The reason for that was because their school sucked. No, seriously. It was built in the early 1930s, and it looked like no one had bothered to fix it up since then. Over half of the lockers were broken, the lights in the gym no longer worked correctly... there was literally a fence of barbed wire built around the school. Which made a lot of sense, considering the fact that most of the kids in that school were forced to go there because of their behavior issues. Rainbow had to go there because it was the only school in the area that his mom was able to afford to send him to.
He turned to the page where he had been drawing his friends, Galaxy and Sabre. They were the only two people in the school who would hang out with him willingly. The others thought he was weird and too girly, but Sabre and Galaxy didn't- they liked him for who he was. And Rainbow adored the two of them so much. Although the two of them had their problems as well.
Sabre's parents fought with each other a lot, and it stressed him out a lot. Sometimes, Sabre would stay over at Rain or Galaxy's house to avoid having to be around them. One time, Rain came over to Sabre's house to comfort him after his parents had both screamed at him for getting a C on a test. He heard them arguing about Sabre downstairs. That same day, Sabre had texted Rainbow and told him that his parents were threatening to send him off to military school. Luckily, Rain's mom and Galaxy's parents were able to talk them out of it.
Galaxy, on the other hand, his problems were more of a mental thing. Galaxy had bipolar disorder, along with an eating disorder that Rainbow forgot how to pronounce. He was skinny as a stick and was one of the most emotional people that Rain knew. Galaxy was bullied by everyone in the school. It made him so sad that he had resorted to shutting himself in from everyone- everyone except Sabre and Rainbow, of course. Galaxy literally only ate sandwiches, pickles, and apples for every meal. His friends tried to get him to eat something else, but he refused.
Still, despite their flaws and issues, Rain loved Galaxy and Sabre. They were his best friends, and he wouldn't give them up for anything.
At least, that's what he thought.
