Lady Malin Moore, heiress and biochemistry student, is the sole survivor of a crash that leaves most of her peers dead. Only the quick thinking of a local scavenger, Rey, saves her from their fate. And it is only Rey's offer of a place to stay that stops her becoming food for the vultures.
Friendship - and perhaps something more - soon develops between the pair as they work together to survive in the burning desert. But events unfolding on the galactic stage are about to find their way to them, and with them, a decision: how much longer can they wait for their parents?
And what do they do if they find them?

— The crash occurs roughly one year before TFA. You can start the story anytime between the crash itself and TFA.
— Malin is level-headed, creative, curious, loving and funny, but also highly self-critical and self-doubting. She puts a lot of pressure on herself to be a good person while defining good as some unattainable perfection. She also feels pressured by others as a result of her status as heiress. Though aware of the privilege her wealth affords her, she's clearly naive and hasn't had much actual experience of the galaxy.
— She was halfway through her third year of university when she crashed, and was focusing on food preservation in preparation for her final project in fourth year. She uses these skills to extend Rey's rations - she's too physically unfit to help her scavenge, so she contributes her knowledge instead. She also has an interest in graphic communication and fashion design.
— Malin is presumed dead by the galaxy, although her parents keep looking for her. She wants to find them, but she loses hope regarding that far quicker than Rey ever did.
— Her parents are Lady Jada and Lord Daven Moore, nobility on Kuat who have large shares in the shipyards there. They are neutral in the war, and have aided neither side financially; however, they have entertained both Republic and First Order officials and see no problem with remaining friends with both sides. After all, they're rich enough to avoid all consequences of the war. They love Malin dearly.
— Malin's arc involves her coming to terms with her parent's stance, which has always troubled her, and forging her own path. She learns that she won't inevitably follow their path just because she's their daughter, and that her birthright doesn't define her - she embraces herself as a person in her own right.
— Rey and Malin are in love by the time TFA happens, and they kiss passionately before Rey leaves for Ahch-To. Malin also joins the Resistance, and they go on to help defeat the First Order together. Malin's parents appear at some point, and that's when she decides to distance herself from their actions, though she loves them. The plot is otherwise fairly open, including Rey's heritage.
— Originally, this was intended as a verse novel, but it's entirely up to you if you want to write it in prose or in verse.
— The title is taken from the piece 'The Lark Ascending' by Vaughn Williams, as it initially prompted this plot, but it's strayed completely from that original inspiration so feel free to change it. Unless you want to make it an extended metaphor, with Malin as the lark or something.
