For being your average nerdy teenage girl, my high school life wasn't too terrible. I have friends, good grades, hobbies to keep me occupied, and a dog that I love more than my own life. That is, until the hottest guys in school decided that it would be fun to make me their toy. Somehow, they're able to find the littlest flaws in a person, and make fun of them or embarrass them until they are the laughing stock or the subject of gossip in the school for at least a week.
It doesn't help that they have KJ, the leader of this gang of assholes and players. He's the kind of guy who can get whatever he wants whenever he wants. Nobody says no to him, and with a rich family, he's got plenty of useful connections. He can find out pretty much anything about anyone, or anyone they're associated with. Rumor has it that KJ exposed someone's cousin for being a drug dealer, and the poor guy was then shunned and ignored by most of the student body for the rest of the year. And even though I tried to keep myself away from guys like him, of course, with my round face and "nerd glasses," (as they like to call them) I was a target.
I didn't expect it to last long. I expected KJ to expose some secret or embarrassing moment, humiliate me, and then be done. He hasn't found anything to expose yet, but that doesn't stop him and his friend from making fun of me in every way possible. I've heard all sorts of names, including slut, which I found hilarious considering I've never dated, went to prom, or kissed, for that matter. But I'll let them think what they want. KJ hasn't figured out that little secret just yet, and if possible, I'd like to keep it that way. The only one who knows is my best friend Kalie, and she'd never talk to guys like him. She already got her fair share of humiliation.
I walk into school, and I am automatically greeted by the last people on this Earth I wanted to see. "Why good morning, JACK." KJ sneers at me. I roll my eyes, and walk past him, pretending not to hear him. That's his favorite insult to use, calling me Jack. It's really not all that creative. My name is Jaclyn, friends call me Jackie, and even though I have shoulder-length hair, he still feels the need to call me Jack, as if I have any features that even look the slightest bit boyish.
But of course, he doesn't want me to get away that easy. The five of them catch up to me before I can blink, and somehow manage to back me into a corner.
"Woah, got somewhere to be, Jack?" I let out a huff of annoyance, but I don't show any emotion. If I react, it only makes it more fun for them. I take a step forward, but they stand their ground. Knowing they won't let me leave without a response, I try to keep my cool.
"Why yes actually, I have language arts. So if you could step aside, I would really appreciate it." They all smirk in unison. Not a good sign.
"Oh, we know you would. You just LOVE the attention, don't you, little virgin?" My mouth gapes open. So they know. Great, just great. I ignore his comment, and attempt to push past them. They push me back. Not hard, but hard enough to where the impact of my back up against the wall should have hurt a little, but to my surprise, it didn't. Maybe I just got lucky or....I gasp aloud. No it couldn't be? Not one of them, please anyone but them. I would take one of the stoner kids over them, but please, PLEASE don't let it be them!
Our society has gone by with a very strange, magic like property. Your soulmate cannot inflict physical pain upon you. So to be shoved back, but not feel pain, that had to mean something. Or maybe I really did just get lucky and not feel it. At this point, it's impossible to tell.
"What's the matter Jack? You too flustered that our bodies touched yours?" KJ sneers. I push again, and somehow, I manage to make it past them. I take off running, and miraculously, I make it to language arts. I'm safe, for now....
But of course, they found me at lunch. I had my tray in hand, so for them to try anything right now could be disastrous. I sit down, but to my surprise, they don't come and bother me. So Kalie and I are able to eat our lunch in peace.
