Adrian stopped me from trying to run away to my room. The current close proximity was killing me. I wanted in my room, but he was blocking the doorway, and I was standing too close.
"We have to talk about this," Adrian's voice was low, getting me excited despite the situation.
"What's there to talk about?" I raised my eyebrow at him.
He huffed, "you're a brat. You know that?"
Goosebumps raced over my skin.
Interesting nickname of choice.
"Why? Explain to me why I'm a brat," I crossed my arms. He leaned down to look closer at me and I began to fear he would hear my heartbeat.
"Why? Because you were a bitch to Lainey! And for what?" He was seething. And I was melting.
"She—" I gasped at his ignorance. "She was cheating on you! How are you not pissed the fuck off about that?! Why are you coming for me?!"
"I am pissed off about her," his voice lowered again. "I'm pissed off about the shit she called you. I knew she was in it for money, I was trying to make a deal with her dad. I didn't give that many shits about her." Adrian's eyes flicked somewhere, lighting me on fire.
"I've dealt with name calling before," my voice was quiet, losing all anger. "People are just insecure and unstable and feel the need to degrade others."
"And you're saying it didn't go to your head at all?"
"Nope."
The eye contact was burning me up. I felt like he could see right through me, so I looked away.
"I'm sorry.." Adrian sighed, and I looked back at him in mild surprise. "I'm sorry for dragging you into that. That wasn't fair for you." He moved to the side and started heading for his room. "You deserve better than that."
Was he trying to get me to fall in love with him?
I flinched.
Love?
I needed to start detaching myself immediately.
Love?!
No fucking way.
I slammed my door.
I couldn't get attached to anything. Anyone. It'd be harder to die that way.
And I needed to die.
*****
I rolled over and looked at the door. I didn't want to face him. Not after what happened the previous night.
My emotions were undeniable. My.. 'feelings'.
The heat I felt for him was real. I couldn't act dense. I knew.
I curled up tighter, listening to the noises from the kitchen.
"Jax!" Adrian called and the noises stopped. I heard him knock on my door before he let himself in. "You okay?"
I blinked at him.
"I just wanted to know how you are after last night," he crouched down beside my bed. Our faces now level.
"I'm fine," I bit my lip, not being able to help looking into his eyes. "I have a question."
His eyes briefly swooped to meet my lips and then they were meeting mine again.
Wasn't that what he did last night, too?
"If you fell in love with someone, and they killed themselves.... how would you feel if they tell you to move on? To live and forget," I wanted to pull the comforter over my head. Block him out.
