The weight of my bags is pulling me down as I run farther into the woods outside of Secretum. Tonight was the night I would finally be free from the government. Just Aspen and I.

As I walk I start to hear people talking. That is never a good sign. I should probably just leave now, as fast as I can, but Aspen might be in trouble. I run faster. I see a circle of Praetoriis surrounding someone, like a lion hunting its prey. I have to be silent to remain undetected by the Praetoriis. Silently hiding my bags in a nearby bush, I climb swiftly up the nearest tree, high enough to see who the person they are surrounding. Even in the dark, I can clearly make out the face of the victim. It's a face I've known forever.

Aspen.

Suddenly, a loud bang is ringing through my ears. Before I can process where it came from, Aspen is on the ground covered in his own blood. The Praetoriis walk away, leaving him to die. When I'm sure it's safe I frantically jump down next to Aspen. Stop the bleeding, stop the bleeding!! Is all that's running through my mind when I reach him. I immediately take off my jacket and use it to put as much pressure on the wound in his chest as I can.

"You're gonna be okay, Aspen! You're not gonna die! You can't die on me! I won't let you!"

Aspen takes a deep breath, his fast fading eyes connecting with mine "Yes I am, and it's your fault, Arielle."

That was the last breath he ever took.

And everything goes dark.
