Glossary

Quirk – a weapon manufactured from a ghoul's kagune, used by CCG ghoul investigators. Preceding the invention of Quirks, the CCG had been using firearms to combat ghouls and needing a more efficient tool, they began intensive research that resulted in its creation. Made solely to exterminate ghouls, Quirks were considered the new generation of technology, promptly and effectively raising the extermination rate. Ghoul investigators transport them in bags or suitcases. [Called Quinque in Tokyo Ghoul]

Rinkaku – one of the four types of kagune; its appearance is similar to scaled tentacles and it's released at the back around the waist. A rinkaku wielder has powerful regenerative abilities and some could even survive the most critical of damage. Its peculiar appearance and structure yield a superior striking power and they excel in brute strength.

...

Your trembling hands clawed at the crushing grip around your throat. They did little to ease your breathing though. Not to mention how you were quickly losing sensation in your body, only aware of your slipping consciousness.

This was really bad.

Why was this happening again? Why was no one doing anything? You were in a cafe full of other ghouls, weren't you? How come none of them had come to your aid yet!?

You soon took to kicking instead. Your leg hit him once or twice. In turn, he only leaned in closer, crushing your last hope of pushing him away.

"What a peculiar human you proved to be," he sneered at you, and though your vision was one big blur of shapes and colors by this point, it wasn't hard to recognize that same kagune which was responsible for the scar still adorning your shoulder emerging from somewhere behind him. "Who would've thought? How many times I'd wished for this to happen over the past few days. Look whose direction fate has smiled in today."

You hated it. You hated it so much.

To be killed by him? To have his deranged and sunken eyes be the last thing you see? Damn it.

Damn it all.

...

Why...?

Why did all of this have to happen to you? What had you done to deserve this? Was fate really this unfair? Or was it perhaps simply biased against you?

He might have still been speaking, but you had long lost your ability to distinguish any words. At this point, you were just hoping the strangulation would kill you before he could get that satisfaction.

It wasn't supposed to end like this.

The kagune behind him moved, lining itself up. Any moment now. At least your pain would have come to an end.

Splatter.

The sound of a kagune stabbing through. And then the blood. Flowing out.

The sound was so familiar to you. So was the sensation.

...

...

...

The sensation that never came.

Suddenly, you roughly landed on the floor, the small shards from the glasses on the tray you had dropped earlier stabbing through your arms and legs. Sure, with them came the pain and blood. There was blood on your chest and on your face too.
