Glossary:

Rc Types – There are four different Rc types: ukaku, kokaku, rinkaku, and bikaku. As a guideline, each type can characteristically subdue another type – a bikaku can defeat a rinkaku, a rinkaku can defeat a kokaku, a kokaku can defeat an ukaku, and an ukaku can defeat a bikaku. Although it may be different for two specific opponents.

Chimera kagune – when ghouls with different Rc types have children, there is a small chance they will inherit abilities from both parents and be born with a chimera kagune. This trait appears to be extremely rare.

...

It hurt.

It hurt. So. Damn. Much.

You had really thought you'd long suffered through the worst of it.

Through the pain of being injured by a ghoul's kagune. Through the fear of being taken away. Through the agonizing hunger that you couldn't bear, that made you want to give in so badly.

But this? This was something you would never have imagined, even in your wildest dreams. No, in your most horrifying nightmares.

This wasn't like that day you lost your parents. This wasn't like the day you were attacked by Monoma.

It hurt, it hurt, it hurt.

Was there a way to make it stop? Was there an end to your misery? There... there had to be, right? Yet the pain was so great you couldn't even hope. You couldn't even think.

You could do nothing but sob and scream. It was all you had left to hold on to your fleeting sanity.

Somehow, though your senses were diminishing as if by the minute, it was almost like you were simultaneously more aware of everything around you – every movement, every sound, every single change to the dim room, in which the sounds of your frantic cries echoed.

Though you could hear nothing, nor see anything through your shut eyelids, you somehow knew a new presence had entered the room. It was as if a clear picture was painted in your mind.

It was the same man that had guarded the entrance to the room you were held captive in earlier. He carried himself with a grace not befitting of a criminal. He cast ta look at you but disregarded the abnormal scene and instead turned to the doctor.

"They have arrived. The League managed to hold them off but two of them slipped past. I have no doubts they're coming this way. Perhaps they will be here any moment now. Should we be doing something to stop them?" He was calm, as if a single rescue operation wasn't threatening the very project he had no doubt spent years working towards. Ujiko stopped for a second. Was he contemplating? Intruders had put an end to the project once already. Perhaps he was concerned history was going to repeat itself.

In the end, he merely shrugged.

"We'll be alright. You set plenty of traps around here. They may have been smart enough to find our current location but inside help won't tell them that this whole place is trapped. If it's only two that slipped past, your kagune should be more than enough to hold them off."

Kagune.

Kagune, kagune, kagune.

That single word broke the perfect picture in your mind. Suddenly it wasn't the dim room that was presented before you. No, everything was blank again. Back to that endless black void - there was no sound, no color, no scent, no feeling. There was simply nothing.
