He Was Always There

Chapter 3

Jannet woke to the sound of her phone ringing. She answered it and murmured, "Hello?"

"Do not tell me you skipped school just to sleep in!" The voice exclaimed angrily. Jannet instantly started panicking before she heard the laughter on the other end of the line. "I'm just messing with you. Did you miss the bus again?"

"Uh, yeah..." She replied groggily.

"Well, I'm out early today for job shadowing so I was wondering if around 2-ish you'd wanna go bowling then to the movies?"

"Sure, Mika. That sounds great!" Jannet started sitting up. She was excited. "I just have to tell Cody first."

"There you go, talking about that Cody guy again. When am I ever gonna get to meet him?"

"I don't know. He's a pretty busy guy and he always seems to make excuses not to meet you. Maybe he has the "best friend" complex."

"What's that?"

"You know, the nervousness guys get before they have to meet another friend's best friend?" "Uh... I'm just going to pretend I understand." She giggled. "So we are gonna go later?"

"Duh! Of course! I can't wait! Wait... What time do you get outta school?"

"I'm actually heading to the job shadowing now and I'll be done around 12."

"Oh, cool. Could you come over first then?"

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"

"Well, you always talk about how Cody is the only person you've had over and... I don't know... It's stupid..."

"No, I get it. I want you to come over. I miss you."

"Aww! I miss you too, Jan."

"School was awful without you... I ended up breaking down a couple of times..."

"Let me guess, you talked to Cody about it instead of me?"

"Well, you were grounded and--"

"I get it. It's okay. I got to go for now but I'll text you when I'm on my way. Love you, Jan!" Jannet sat there holding her phone, staring at the picture of Mika. Mika was beautiful. She had medium-short brown hair, that was slightly wavy, with a couple of purple streaks for cystic fibrosis awareness. She had beautiful dark brown eyes, black glasses, and soft pink lips. Jannet sighed as she set the phone down. She looked around for Cody and saw that he wasn't anywhere to be found. Cody disappeared a lot so she didn't think anything of it.
