CHAPTER ONE: CAMERON'S POV
"Thank you," I say politely to the lunch lady, grabbing my tray.
"Pleasure," she grumbles sarcastically, waving me away. I nod and head to check out line to pay.
Jasmine strides up to me, her long legs easily passing everybody else's. "Don't worry, she does it to everybody. Even me." We both giggle.
"Except Ethan," I say, nodding my head in his direction. The lunch lady is smiling at him, handing him his tray. Ethan sees us looking at him and winks one of his blue-green eyes, while pushing his hands through his dirty blonde hair. "Did he just..."
"Gross!" Jasmine exclaims, moving up in the line. "Why is he so popular?"
"Well, he's not exactly bad to look at..." I say punching in my ID. I nod at the lunch lady as Jasmine makes a sound of disgust, and we head for the courtyard doors.
As we approach, Brandon Young and Asher White notice us and jump to grab the doors. As we pass, Asher smiles at me but doesn't say anything. Olivia sees us and waves us over.
Me and Jasmine sit at our usual seats next to eachother. "Asher likes you," Olivia says matter of factly, flipping her blonde hair off her shoulder. "You should ask him out."
"Livvy Morgan, you know I don't like him."
"Ya, but still."
"No."
"Fine."
I finally take a moment to look around the courtyard. Same old, same old. Pink roses surrounding the two tables, brick walls covered in ivy keeping us enclosed within the courtyard. Jas on my left, Livvy on my right, Ashley across from me. Asher behind me, Brandon on his right. Same two round tables as last year.
"So, how was the first half of the first day of 10th grade?" I turn around to see that Asher is just sitting down, and is talking to me and Jas.
"Good," Jas replies.
"How about you?" Asher asks me, staring into my eyes.
"Great so far," I say, breaking eye contact to turn back to my table.
"Good," Asher sighs.
"See!" Olivia whispers excitedly. "He likes you!"
"He does," Haiden states. This is unusual, as her and Olivia are always disagreeing.
"OMG! Can you believe we already have a math test next week?" Jas asks suddenly. I give her a look that says "thanks" just as the bell rings.
***
My next period is English. As I walk in the door, I see Crystal Star standing next to her little posse of followers, flipping her thick blonde hair, looking at her nails, and just being cruel to everyone around her. She sees me and rushes over, her posse following like a pack of lost dogs.
"OH MY GOD! Cam! No way! You are NOT in my English class! Besties, right?"
"Um, besties, sure. And, I go by Cameron, not Cam."
"Cam, Cameron, same dif! Hey, maybe we'll sit next to each other for once!"
"Yeah, maybe."
I hope not.
