The old and reddish building stood tall in front of him. Some windows were dimly lit by a warm yellow light from inside, some had curtains while others were just bare. The rain seemed strong enough to pull the apartments down into chunks of concrete and bricks considering how old the structure was, according to his father. It did seem old, like a haunted house of some sort.
"Hey Sally, come help me get this last box out from the trunk won't cha?"
"Coming Dad"
The box is light, thankfully. Sally's small frame didn't help when carrying heavy stuff, his arms were like noodles to him. His dad closed the trunk and hurried inside, the rain was still pouring. Everyone must be busy or asleep, no noise could be heard from any room. They both walk into the elevator and the awkwardness fills the space. His father clears his throat.
Here we go.
"So, sport, how do you like the apartments? Vintage, no?"
"They're cool, kinda looks like a haunted place"
"Yeah, ah..hey, there are kids your age living here y'know? Maybe you could make some friends"Sal stays quiet for a minute. He's not good at making friends, for that people would have to get close to him in the first place, but his prosthetic tends to scare them away. He tried to soften his aspect by wearing pigtails, but instead he got some homophobic remarks out of it. He liked the pigtails though, he wears them all the time now.
"Yeah"
The elevator came to a stop, a little 'ding' signals their arrival. The door to their apartment is open, and Sal's cat and best friend, Gizmo, is waiting for them both at the door. He pets the cat's head with one hand as he walks into the living room, putting the box down. His dad went quiet for a bit.
"Sal, come here" he gestured for Sal to get near him. Sally looked at him with an eyebrow raised and took a few steps towards him.
"After tomorrow, you'll be back at school champ..." his dad started, sitting down on their old orange couch "...and I need you to be open with me. I-I need you to tell me if something's wrong son, I am here for you. And I...I know I have flaws and I swear to you I've been trying, I'm doing this for us Sal. I just wanted to tell you that you can count on me son"
Sal's eyes softened, he loved his dad. Sal made his way towards the couch and sat beside his nervous dad, who shifted in his spot to make room for his son.
Henry looked at Sal expectantly."I'll tell you if something's wrong dad, thanks for saying those things. I know you're trying, mom would be proud of you"
The last part came out half choked, it was hard to talk about her sometimes. His dad pulled him into a tight hug. His eyes were watering as he pulled away.
He gave Sally two pats on the back and stood up sniffling. He picked a box labeled "Henry's" and headed for his room. He stopped at his room and looked back at Sally."I love you son."
"I love you too dad"
His dad closed the door behind him. Sally knew that talking wasn't one of his dad's strengths, so he appreciated the fact that he opened up a little.
He grabbed his stuff and went to his new room, Gizmo following him closely behind. He plopped his stuff on top of his bed and let out a sigh. He unbuckled his mask and took a deep breath. The room smelled different from his old house, his prosthetic tends to conceal most smells. He finished unbuckling and set the mask on his nightstand. The room was bare, no personality whatsoever. He'll decorate it soon enough.
He explored his bathroom, it was small but it had everything he needed, a bath tub, a shower, a sink and a toilet. The sink's mirror was kind of rusty on the edges thanks to its old metal frame. He took off his clothes and put on an old adventure time shirt that he used as a pijama.
He usually slept on his underwear only but it was cold that night. The rain helped him sleep, it was a long day after all.
