Chapter 1
Sam's POV:
I woke before everyone else in the station, my groggy eyes peeling open to slowly examine the room. Something was about to happen, like always I could feel it, almost taste it in the air. Not even thirty seconds later, I was thrown into action as the alarm went off overhead, signaling that it was time to do our job.
"C'mon, boys! Rise and Shine!" I shouted to my team as they jumped from their beds and prepared the trucks. I chuckled at my best friend Brody groaned through tired eyes. "C'mon Brody, the life of a firefighter is not our own. Hup too"
"Aye Aye!"
We all hustled down the ten foot poles to the awaiting gear as our puppy, Chester, barked loudly wishing us luck. As I listened to the radio, my heart dropped though. House fire that had been going for quite some time. Apparently, homeowners were home but no one had exited the residence as of yet. Meaning, this job could get messy. I looked to my crew and warned them of the dangers and fears ahead. They knew the risks and they knew that the odds were stacked against them. They just didn't care enough to let anyone know it actually bothered them.
"Alright! Let's Go! Let's Go! Let's Go!!!" I shouted as everyone sprinted to the trucks. Survivors or not, it would be dumb not to try. As we rallied in the trucks I looked to my main team and made sure the radios were on so the others could hear me. "Alright boys, I'll warn you, this one isn't looking too good. Three confirmed beings in the house, Mom, Dad, 10 year old female. Now from neighbors descriptions, they are most likely in their bed rooms left and right of the hallway. I want this to be a safe recovery. If it doesn't look like we can make it, we are not going in. However, I also want some closure for their families so we are going to do EVERYTHING we possibly can to make this a good turn out. Do you copy!" They slapped each other on the back.
"We're with you to the end Sammy Boi!" one hollard.
"Good. Now we're here! Let's go!"
We all filed out of the truck each person having a job to do. It was like watching a well trained orchestra. Each person knew their notes, instrument, and cues. It was as if the conductor was not needed. However, as I strengthened the resolve of some of my newer recruits I knew, I was just as needed as they were and vice versa. These men were my brothers.
"SAM! I've found the girl, she's alive but barely. I need help. I can't clear a path and it looks like the stairs are getting sketchy ...."
"Brody. No! Elias! You have lead!"
"Sir!"
"Follow Orders!"
"You're not in the marines anymore, Captain! He can take care of himself, we need you here!" I shook my head going in and heard two more men follow me. Gaging the situation, I understood how to get out right away.
"Zack, go out and tell Elias to put the bucket about 5 feet from her window."
"Sam, the tree we can't get past it."
"I know! Make sure you get ready to catch!" I chuckled, running my way up the stairs only for them to crumble the minute I reached the top. "Tanner! You find the parents?"
"Yes sir! Still breathing but barely. I can't get out now tho."
"Hand one to me!" I took the dad as Tony held tight to mom. Then we went past Brody for me to dig us all out of this.
