Chapter 2

Olivia's POV:

"Liv, your firefighter is back from X-rays. Be warned Sam's pretty grumpy though."

"Sam?"

"Yes, Captain Dunn...His name is Samuel Jay Dunn. A rather difficult figure round here. Honestly though, he's the nicest guy you'll ever meet, he's just one of those onion types. Kinda like you."

"Ah. Thanks Kayla."

"Hey. You know I didn't mean it that way. You're just closed off. I sometimes think I'd have an easier time with the Captain."
"I'm sorry."

"You started in a small northern hospital barely 2 weeks ago. I can't blame you for being closed off especially with the other stuff you got going on."

"I guess. I just yeah. I don't know."

"C'mon, cheer up kiddo! You get to go see that hot firefighter no matter how difficult he is."

My nurse Kayla laughed as she handed me my newest patient's chart. I cringed at what looked to be a severe fracture in his fibula. This injury would put him out for a few weeks. I doubt he'll be happy about that. Granted, I've heard stories of the war hero fire chief. However, what I saw in those eyes was so much more. There was a connection. Whether good or bad, there's something there. On looks alone, it made sense why the women seemed to puddle at his feet. However, I don't know. I'm in no position to take on a relationship. Especially after what happened in New York. Big city, multiple doctors, no one noticed when things happened...

"NO. Not here. Not now. You have patients to see." I scolded myself. "Best get to gettin." I shook my head before opening the door.

"Ah! Finally. Now would you please tell me I am fine so I can go back to the firehouse?"

"I'm sorry but no..." I brought up the x-ray. "You have a fractured fibula right on the end here. I'm afraid it will be about 3 weeks in a boot then we can talk about you getting back to work."

"HAHAHAHAHA!!!! What Kayla told you to prank me?"

"No?"

"Me takeoff from work? I'm afraid that's a no go sweetheart." Sweetheart...

"Excuse me. The least you can do is call me Doctor. I think I've earned that."

"Hey! Whoa Whoa Whoa...Down girl. I'm sorry I didn't mean that to come off the way you took it." Her eyes flared. She moved so she didn't have to take that. Now, even here in Macatawa Michigan, people are still talking down to her...

"Let's just see the foot."

"Suit yourself. Be warned. It does not smell too great. Granted, I suppose I don't smell too great. My sincerest apologies."

"Considering you saved three peoples' lives that are now conscious upstairs, I don't think I can rightly complain about your odor." he instantly perked up.

"They're all already awake?"

"Yeah, the dad we gotta monitor for any smoke issues but for the most part being in the oxygen chamber has done them some real good. Now, the best thing for you is to rest up. Do you have anyone that can stay with you?" I said, examining his foot.

"Ummm, I can stay at the firehouse."

"Waiting for your healing, that's not recommended. It isn't healthy psychologically."

"Why?"

"Well when someone can't rush healing then being around why they want to rush things it's temptation. You'll hear that siren go off and wish you were going with them. You'll either rip that boot right off and go which will result in a complete break, or you'll get depressed." He chuckled.
