it's only been a month since billy hargrove moved into the small rural town of hawkins, indiana. but it only took him a week or so to cause trouble for one of the students; steve harrington.
steve harrington was the guy that everyone wanted to be, and the guy that all the girls wanted to be with. he had it all: the charm, the looks, and especially the hair. people even went so far as to call him "the king".
so when billy heard all there was to hear about steve, he set up the perfect plan to dethrone him.
steve was quick to catch on to the sly ways that billy would manage to take everything from him. but, the last thing he hadn't taken from him was his rank on the basketball team. and steve sure as hell wasn't going to give it up without a fight.
sports was the least important thing to steve, but it was the last shred of dignity he had left.
in the gym for practice, they were split into two teams. steve taking the lead on one, and billy taking leadership on the other. the game was about teamwork, but as far as they knew, they were the only two on the court who mattered.
their coach blew his whistle loudly and it rang throughout the gym. steve readied himself as he watched the ball fly into the air, but as he darted towards it and reached out his hand to catch it before anyone else could: billy was already there. grabbing it, and swiftly making his way to the hoop on the other side of the court.
the game had barely been going for five minutes before billy had miraculously made two points for his team. steve tried not to look as if he were too much in awe, as he told himself that there were plenty of shots for him to make.
at least ten minutes had passed by now. steve's team had only six points, and billy's had twelve.
steve was doing his best to keep himself composed, knowing it was just practice and not an actual game, but the smug look that billy had on his face and how much of a show-off he was started to bother steve.
as his eyes grazed over billy and watched his every move, steve couldn't help but notice that the shirt he was wearing when practice started was now gone. "show-off." he thought to himself.
the game was coming to an end, and steve had finally managed to keep the ball in his hands. he dribbled the ball between his legs and readied himself to make a basket, but billy had began distractingly pushing his chest up against steve's back as he taunted him and whispered in his ear.
"harrington, right?" billy began in a sly tone, "i heard you used to run this school."
"king steve is what they used to call you, huh? then he turned bitch."
steve looked at the boy behind him as he tried to figure out a way to get passed him, "hey, maybe you should shut up and play the game." and without another word, billy swept him off his feet. before steve knew it, he had landed on the ground as billy made his way to the hoop.
he scrambled to his feet, and made a desperate attempt to catch up to him. but billy was already jumping in the air and swooping the ball under his leg, before dramatically tossing it up through the hoop.
billy let out a howl of victory as the coach whistled for a final time, signaling that practice was over.
steve stood on the court in defeat and disbelief. he panted breathlessly, watching as the other students went towards the locker room.
he was so upset that he didn't notice his girlfriend, nancy wheeler, entering the gymnasium and standing by the door. "you look gross." she said with a quiet laugh, pushing her brown curls behind her ear.
