Who would've thought that one single person could have that big of a record? Well, this is Sierra Lexington's case. Ana told me everything about her yesterday and I find myself a little frightened by her now.
Sierra has kind of a bad reputation around school... More like a bitch reputation. Gossip says her last year's resolution was to hook up with 70% of the school's boys, and legend says she did 80% instead.
And it doesn't stop there. Ana warned me about her not being the nicest person around school and that if she ever talked to someone apart from her friends, it was either to hurt or to get something from that someone. That last part still seems a bit strange because she was very polite with me yesterday. Perhaps she is trying to change.
Anyway, I now find myself getting ready for my second day of school. I make sure to get up half an hour earlier than normal to get my hair and makeup done, since it seems that everyone here spends hours on their looks, and I thought why not hop on the trend?
Who am I even kidding? The motivation will eventually run out and I am probably going to give up by tomorrow, as I'm the opposite of a morning person and I will most certainly be too tired to wake up this early another day. But now, my curls are done and my makeup is on fleek, so I run out the door to meet Ana.
"You glowing girl!" She instantly points out with that energetic voice that characterizes her.
"I put some extra effort today." I do a silly spin and she giggles. "It's not something you'll see regularly, you know?"
"So, why this sudden effort? Is it for a guy? I knew there was a guy! Why didn't you tell me?" What is it with her relating everything with boys?
"Ana, I already told you I'm not interesting on meeting anyone right now," I defend myself. "I did it for me."
"Yeah sure." It is clear that she still doesn't believe me. "I like that strong independent woman attitude though, it suits you."
"Thanks, I learned from the best."
We get to Fortes High and before we go our separate ways Ana's expression turns to a more serious one. "Remember what I told you yesterday?" She whispers.
"Yeah, but I'm still a bit confused... She didn't seem that bad." She seemed rather nice.
"Just promise me you'll be careful around her today, okay?"
"You sound like my mother, but okay, I promise."
"Good. Bye, sweetie!" She jokes.
"Oh stop it." We hug and go to class. I have Physics first and I can't help but sleep the whole period, dreaming with the break that is awaiting me.
However, my plans of enjoying the break don't go as planned because, as I am exiting the Physics classroom, I find Carter waiting for me at the door, with his hoodie on, of course... He wouldn't want to be associated with me.
"You coming to the restaurant today?" He asks in the most normal way, as if he didn't basically threaten me yesterday about coming near him. He is so bipolar. How did he even find me here in the first place?
"Sorry, do I know you?" Let's give him a bit of his own medicine, shall we?
"Funny. You coming then?" Funny? Funny is that he managed to say the word funny without a single drop of fun in his tone. What is he? A robot? Probably a very old robot that is clearly not functioning correctly.
"Yeah, it's Tuesday, isn't it?"
"You do know we can't sing without rehearsing first, right?"
"So enlighten me, Carter, what do you propose?"
"Easy. Music room, now." And those words were what finished with my hopes of having my awaited chill and relaxing break, which is now going to turn into the complete opposite.
"Only for today, right?"
"Until it is no longer necessary."
"Great."
"You'll thank me later." It is hard to admit it, but he is actually right. We have to sing again tonight and, honestly, I don't feel ready... at all.
I follow him through the halls until we reach an isolated room that is filled with several instruments, including my favorite, a grand piano. Nostalgia invades my body. I used to play it all the time with my dad when I was little, but I guess I stopped when-
"Fira?" Carter interrupts my thoughts, and I partly thank him for that. I was getting into a pretty dark place in my memory.
"Sorry, I umm... got distracted."
"I noticed. Are you okay?" As if he cares.
"Yeah. So, with what song should we start?"
"Do you know Put Your Head On My Shoulder?"
"By Paul Anka, one of my favorites."
"Good." He pulls out his phone and plays a karaoke version of the song. He begins singing and I join him. I had forgotten about this human part of Carter, I was getting used to him acting like a robot at school, it actually feels good to see him expressing some feelings through the lyrics.
After we finished, Carter is silenced for a while. It seems as if he is considering something. "I was thinking you could have the third stanza all for yourself," he finally says.
"What do you mean? Like a little solo?" I can't believe it.
"Your voice just goes really well with that part... Can I trust you with that?" I nod, trying to hide my excitement. "But no panic attacks this time, okay?" We laugh.
Who is he? Making jokes and smiling. Singing truly brings out the best of him.
We repeat the song, only it sounds way better. It is truly the details which make a difference, and I am proud to say I totally nailed that third stanza. I'm happy for my little solo, but I know the excitement would eventually turn into anxiety at the restaurant. I am fine with singing, just not in front of so many people.
We begin with another song, but the bell cuts us off, signaling it is time to return to class, to reality.
"See you tonight, Fira, good practice."
We are about to exit but Carter stops when we reach the door.
"You coming?" I ask him.
"I think it's better if you go first and I wait a minute before exiting... You know, for the people-"
"To think we don't know each other, I understand." Just when I thought he was different. "You really can't stand me, can you?"
"No, Fira, it's not-"
I shut the door. Now it is me who cuts his words off.
