"Time check?"
"6:12," my mom reported.
"Crap, we only have 15 minutes left before we have to meet up with everyone at the restaurant," I complained.
"Hon, I'm sure everyone will understand if we are a tad late. Erin's mother has never once shown up to anything on time so if anything, we have at least another half-hour."
"True," I agreed, "but still, I told Oscar that we would be down in the lobby by 6:30 and I don't want him to have to wait by himself."
"I'm sure he will be fine, now if you really want to be on time then you might want to figure out what you are going to wear."
I turned away from my mom and began to dig through my suitcase to hunt down the outfit I had planned for tonight. I carelessly threw my competition clothes onto the bed in the hunt for the pair of red shorts and the black shirt I had packed.
Typically for something like tonight, I would wear a dress but since the girls had planned to do out pre-competition ritual tonight, shorts were going to be a necessity.
"Your dad said he won't be able to be here until early tomorrow morning. He wants to take us out to breakfast," my mom informed, combing out her hair.
"I have to be checked in with the registrar by 8. Will we have time?" I asked, grabbing my outfit, make-up bag, and hair supplies.
"We should," she shrugged her shoulders, "do you think Oscar likes me?" my mom asked out of the blue.
I headed towards the bathroom to change and patted my mom on the shoulder as I passed.
"Lana? That wasn't an answer," she complained. I closed the door and locked it and I could hear her standing right on the other side, "I'm just afraid I might have been too hard on him earlier at the airport. I should have let your father do all the questioning so that I wouldn't have to be the bad cop."
I had to stifle the laugh that was trying to bubble to the surface. In only a few hours my mothers' opinion of Oscar has taken a complete 180. Even though she wouldn't admit it outright I could tell that she liked him. Now, I just have to hope he impresses my father.
"Don't worry about that mom, Oscar has said, and I quote 'you're mom is awesome' so you have nothing to worry about," I reassured.
"Good," my mom stated, leaving me alone to finish getting ready. I sent Oscar a quick text to let him know that we would be down in the lobby soon and finished applying the last touch of makeup.
I left the bathroom and my mom turned to give me a once over before sitting down on the edge of the bed with a deep sigh.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing," she sighed again, "it's just, look at you! You're all grown up. You have a boyfriend and before I can even blink you'll be off to college. It's just all going by so much faster than I ever would have imagined."
I joined her on the edge of the bed and brought her into a hug, "it's going fast for me to you know. Even though I am so excited about going to college, I'm also heartbroken. It's not easy for me to make the best mom in the entire world an empty nester."
After a minute of comforting each other, my mother pulled away and wiped a tear off her cheek, "I'm not going to be an empty nester. I'm going to adopt more dogs and raise fur babies."
"Ferris won't be happy about having to share all the attention," I warned.
"He'll learn to accept the change. Now, enough blubbering. I'm hungry and I want to see all of the rock moms."
