John Watson was a very, very straight man. He was a straight man who married a straight woman and had a straight relationship. He even had a daughter with her, which basically proves how very, very straight he was.
At least, that's what he told himself.
However, Sherlock Holmes saw right through people. The façades they so desperately put up were plastic wrap to him, easy to see through and even easier to take down in a single blow.
And though John was Sherlock's best friend, he was no more difficult to see through in most respects.
And Sherlock Holmes, the world's greatest (and only) consulting detective, knew from the moment that he met John Watson that he wasn't quite as straight as he claimed to be.
He'd never brought this up, of course. He'd come very close at many points very early on in their partnership, but eventually, he came to understand that he couldn't just go around deducing & embarrassing people. Furthermore, he began to realize that John clearly wasn't fully comfortable with that facet of his identity yet and had to work out some personal issues, as well as some repressed emotions (caused by oppressive parenting, no doubt). And he didn't want to make his friend uncomfortable.
Sherlock himself had never even thought it mattered. He'd never had any sort of desire for romantic or sexual companionship, so for a while, he'd considered himself aro/ace and moved on, never giving it a second thought. After all, his parents wouldn't care if he was gay or anything of the sort. They were nonjudgmental people who knew that their children were not like any others, and never pushed gender norms or standards for sexuality on their children.
So he never said anything, which only further convinced John that he was, in fact, straight.
But if you're looking for truth—if you're looking for reality—then here it is:
John Watson was not straight, and Sherlock Holmes damn well knew it.
