Tang Yi stared at Jack across the desk. Both of their phones rang at the same time pulling them out of their staring contest.
Tang Yi glanced down and saw Shao Fei's goofy picture come up on his phone. He glanced over at Jack's phone and saw he had a similar picture of his boyfriend. Tang Yi shook his head ruefully, but then he sobered up as he thought about Jack.
He was a mysterious guy. His red and black hair and leather jacket painted him as a rebel. Careless and reckless, but Tang Yi sometimes felt that was a facade. Something to make people underestimate him.
He stared at Jack again and stayed quiet. This was a battle of wills and he would win.
Jack heaved a sigh and rolled his eyes skyward as if asking for patience. "What do you want to know?"
"You were working for him", Tang Yi said quietly. Tang Yi took the photographs from inside his drawer and threw them across the desk at Jack. The pictures were of Jack talking to that crooked detective's boss. Jack's fingers spread the pictures apart to look at them better and then leaned back in his chair. A picture of relaxation with the devil-may-care attitude that infuriated Tang Yi and probably everyone who had ever met him.
"So what?" Jack said with a smirk. "Why aren't I in one of your little dark offices with your goons holding me back as you pummel me into the ground?"
Tang Yi leaned forward with a serious expression. "What's your game? If you're not on my side, then why did you help me?"
That erased Jack's smirk off of his face. "Things are a little bit more complicated for me than your side or their side."
Tang Yi was losing patience with how cryptic Jack was being. "Let me just put it all on the table. I plan to go legit. For real this time. Are you going to help me or stand in my way?"
"Do you trust me?" Jack asked curiously.
Tang Yi shrugged. "I don't trust many people. You have talents I appreciate."
Jack got up abruptly. "As lovely as that sounds, I'm retired," he lied. "I plan to spend the rest of my days making Zhao Zi happy."
Tang Yi got up and stuck out his hand. Jack shook it, but when he tried to let go Tang Yi gripped his hand tightly. Jack looked into his eyes and felt a chill go down his spine. "Let it stay that way then. If I see you sniffing around, I'd be happy to introduce you to one of my little dark offices," Tang Yi said mockingly.
Tang Yi let go of Jack's hand and sat down. He took up his phone to call back Shao Fei and turned his chair to give Jack his back. Jack shrugged. I guess they were done.

Shao Fei picked up his phone after the third ring. He put on what he thought was an adorable pout, and his coworkers snickered behind his back, and answered the phone.
"Tang yi, how come you didn't pick up?" he asked with a cutesy tone.
Tang Yi smiled in spite of himself. "I was with Jack."
Shao Fei became serious and cleared his throat. "How did it go?"
"I'm going to keep an eye on him," Tang Yi said.
"Maybe I can ask Zhao Zi about it," Shao Fei said.
"Don't even. You have no sense of crisis. You always go head first into things you have no idea about. Let me handle this," Tang Yi's voice was firm. Just what he needed. Innocent and bubbly Zhao Zi trying to play detective.
Shao Fei looked down at his phone incredulously. "I've helped you many times, dumbass. You always try to do things alone."
"I mean it," Tang Yi's voice hardened.
