The weekend went by too fast. It was mid week and already I had a forever growing headache. I got up Wednesday morning and got Hayan ready. Once everything was in order I went to the kitchen to grab the one thing I knew that might make me feel less nervous about taking Hayan to see her pediatrician. As I pulled open the container my face dropped.
"No more apple turnover?" I was pouting, I was grown man pouting like a child over a fricken pastry. I didn't regret it. I knew of only one solution.
"Come on honey, Daddy needs to make an emergency stop." I said to Hayan as I picked her up and put her in her stroller. I rolled her out to the car and put her in her car seat, then packed her stroller away into the trunk.
I got in and turned on the car, heading out the driveway to stop at my only saving grace- The Bakery.
I parked the car and got out, grabbing the stroller from the trunk I unfolded it and then got Hayan into it, strapping her in. She was looking as cute as usual, which made me wonder if I could get a free turnover .... no no, my brother's were getting in my head. I sighed and opened the door to the bakery, holding it open with one hand while I pushed Hayan through. I looked around, not many people this morning but enough to look over at me and make me feel like the awkward dad I was.
"Is that my favorite little princess?" I heard the woman's familiar light tone. I turned to see her coming around the counter and she crouched down in front of Hayan who was reaching out to her.
"How's little Miss Hayan? Huh? Did you bring your daddy in just to get you a treat?" She asked her, giggling as she booped my daughter's nose. My heart did something then.. I think I might have acid reflex.
"So what can I get you?" She stood and asked, I assumed me.
"Oh, uh.. actually. Mrs.... er.. Nana Heart gave me those apple turnovers and-"
"Ah, say no more. She mentioned you liked the first ones I gave her which is why I doubled the amount last time. I'm glad you like them." She giggled as she hurried back and grabbed a box.
"I'm going to assume you want two dozen." She added and wanted to kiss her for how we barely knew each other but she was able to read my mind.. or my stomach.
"Yes, yes. And yes. You're a mind reader." I chuckled As she pulled a large baking sheet from one of the cooling racks and set it on the counter. She began to use tongs to put each Turnover into the box she had for me.
"I'll even give you fresh baked ones because while the little princess over there can't have any yet, You might need them to keep running around after her." She giggled again. Was she always this cheerful?
"Actually I'm in panic mode right now." I replied.
"Oh?" She asked as she kept adding more.
"Yeah, first big Doctors appointment for certain S.H.O.T's." I answered and she sighed.
"Ahh... yeah I've heard that's hard for parents. You going to be okay? You do look a little pale." She commented. I swallowed and nodded.
"Yeah, yeah I got this... no problem." I said more to reassure myself than anyone else. Every time I'd seen here we'd talk a little, but I still didn't really know her. She put one more apple turnover into the box and rang up the order.
"I'm throwing in a coffee to go, you might need it." She laughed, wow... her laugh, interesting...
"Ah, thanks really. You don't have to do that." I replied with a light chuckle.
"I know, but you've helped my Nan a lot so consider it a thank you." She smiled warmly and I couldn't help but to smile back and nod my head like an idiot.
