The buckets you carry are cumbersome, but taking in the fresh air of the outdoors is well worth the inconvenience. The long stretch of winter was over and you've earned your freedom to go outside weeks ago. You hadn't thought of such a thing during the chill. It was the sort of weather that your mother said you could lose toes to. Snow had been piled high as far as the eye could see. It had been up to your knees, at least.

You enjoyed the air that was just right as you traveled down to the river to collect water for spring cleaning. Rui was impressed with your initiative when you'd approached him for taking up a task as large as cleaning the entire house. Old webbing littered the inside that made your skin crawl when you brushed passed it and the dust in the unused sections of his home was thick.

He attached a thread to your ankle. Something to find your way home with. The fact that it could slice through your ankle entirely if you made a run for it down the mountain escaped you.

Your peace was interrupted by a shout. It wasn't as if you hadn't heard them before. They'd just never been this close. A hand found its way around your bicep causing you to drop the buckets in your surprise. You jerked to face the person who held your arm, and your heart sank at the sight of the black uniform and the sword that hung from his hip.

"What are you doing out here?" The young man hissed, low enough to try and not draw attention to himself. "Those monsters are everywhere." The swordsman peered over his shoulder, but the canopy of the trees blocked the view of the dark depths beyond. "I-I have to get you out of here. C'mon my squad's back there."

He yanked on your arm and the feeling of deja vu washed over you as you stood your ground.

It made your stomach twist with nausea as he pulled at you again. "Let go of me..." He turned to face you with his brows furrowed in confusion as he desperately attempted to lead you back.

"We're here to help-" He began before you began to tug yourself away.

You found a voice that was louder than the near whisper from before. "Let me go!" Your struggles had you both circling, but you finally pushed him away when his footing was interrupted by one of the pails on the ground. The slayer tumbled down the hill.

His cries seemed to echo on forever until silence followed a resounding crack. You looked down to where the river was, to where his head had collided with a boulder below, and then down to your hands. The fact that you had snuffed out a life didn't bother you. It was just how numb you were to such a thing that surprised you. The Spider house had hardened you in ways you didn't think were possible.

You gathered up the buckets and continued with your task. The walk home was longer than you'd expected, but the way that the family lingered on the porch made your throat dry. You swallowed, expecting lashes for returning home late.

Rui's brother broke the silence. "Hey, Fake. That was some nice work you did taking care of Ma's straggler. Did you see that slayer's face?" He barked a laugh.

"There wasn't much of a face left from what I saw." His sister added from her spot where she leaned against the house. "It wasn't an impressive death, but what can you do?"

Her playful prodding was nothing with how Rui stared at you owlishly. "You did well. Go on." He jerked his head towards the door. "Mother can prepare your lunch while you clean. You like thighs as well, yes?" You nodded.

"Yeah, I do."
