A letter for the coronavirus pandemic...

Dear Kate,

I'm writing this letter from behind my sterilised wall. You know I cannot bear to do things by halves or even by nine-tenths. I've sterilised the house, the gutter in front of it, the garden. I've banned all visitors, and not even my grandchildren can be brought over. You see, I have to protect myself.

Do you know how old I am?

Adwoa Mansa, I am 65 oo. Officially, I am 56, and that is because I have been trying to delay my retirement, but the truth is out today. Sigh. I am not a small girl at all. And this coronavirus is especially dangerous to people in my age group. So my age mates are doing the best that we can for ourselves. Drinking water? Check. Taking multivitamins, and getting enough sleep? Double check.

I read on the Old Girls' Association whatsapp page that it is good to take two tablespoons of honey, with 18 ml of gari heated over a blue-hot fire, mixed with fermented fufu that has been boiled in prekese leaves. Apparently, this mixture boosts immunity and strengthens the body's resistance against the coronavirus. It has a unique smell, but that is a small price to pay for a keeping safe in these times, eh? Stefania Dogbe (née Archer, SSHS 1975 Year Group) swears by this concoction, and some of the other ladies on the page say that it is effective. So, I'm taking it. Already, I think I am seeing some slight results. Yesterday, the running stomach that I got was not easy at all. The concoction is purging me on the inside. I think I have to take it religiously for a while for it to really start working.

I tried to introduce your cousin to it, but she turned her nose up in disgust. Please, talk to her for me. Why is she so stubborn? We must do our best to combat the coronavirus oo. Abibiduro is the cure. I'm sure of this. The Western medicines may have even been made to eliminate us. But our forefathers were taking abibiduro, and they lived very long without any of the sicknesses that are so prevalent today. I repeat, abibiduro is the cure. Adwoa rather prefers that we wash our hands, wear nose masks, and pray. I believe in prayer, but I also believe in common sense. So I think she should add this one to it. Meanwhile, she keeps quoting, "WHO this", "WHO that".

Kate, I didn't leave you out, okay? I sent you some bitters. Your mother, may her soul rest in peace, would have done the same if she was alive. Canada is very cold, and I hear this virus enjoys aircondition. So I sent you Aboagyewaa bitters to help you to get stronger and fight. In fact, I sent two bottles, one for you, and one for our in-law, so that he does not get sick. And make sure you take a video of the two of you taking your medicine. I want to be sure that you are not being stubborn like your cousin.

Take good care of the children for us. And, make sure to bring them to Ghana when the storm blows over.

I would really love to talk more, but it's time for me to take my seventh bath for the day. Stay warm and safe.

Love,

Mama Grace
