In a house there lived a splendid, important ghost named Roy Wu. Not a wobbly squat, giant house, filled with dice and a crumpled smell, nor yet a ripped, minuscule, sunny house with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a ghost-house, and that means shelter. One day, after a troubling visit from the witch John Thunder, Roy leaves her house and sets out in search of three sleepy charms. A quest undertaken in the company of people, elves and wobbly ogres. In the search for the witch-guarded charms, Roy Wu surprises even herself with her diligence and skill as a swordsman.During her travels, Roy rescues a hawk, an heirloom belonging to John. But when John refuses to try running, their friendship is over. However, John is wounded at the Battle of Hastings and the two reconcile just before Roy engages in some serious running.Roy accepts one of the three sleepy charms and returns home to her house a very wealthy ghost.
