It was February 1st, the start of the life swap. When they had finished arguing about the terms, Alex had convinced Eric to swap in February, seeing as it was the shortest month of the year, and Alex had to buy their brother a binder for the plan to work.
The two had agreed on several terms, one being that the two had to be each other even at home. Their peers would get too suspicious if they saw the twins come out of the school bathroom as each other. Another condition was that it was Alex who had to play basketball in their brother's place. Again, it would be too weird in the locker room situation. They both thought they were prepared, but were they really?
"Eri- Alex!" Alex shouted into the hallway they shared. "Can you help me find... MY bra?" Eric nearly burst out laughing just by hearing that sentence.
"I need to help you find YOUR bra?" Eric asked, suppressing giggles.
Alex reddened as they glared at their brother across the hall with bleary eyes. "Yes..."
"Top drawer on the left," he laughed as Alex stormed away. "You're welcome!" Alex wasn't happy with their situation in general, but it didn't help that they had to wake up at midnight to switch and sleep in each other's rooms.
When Alex finished putting on not only their brother's feminine clothing, but his makeup as well, they finally went to the kitchen to eat. As they walked in, the rest of the family all looked up.
"It's so odd, isn't it?" Mrs. Hicks asked her husband. "Alex, waking early and energetically, and Ally sleeping in." She looked at Alex with a look of deep concern. "Are you sick?"
Eric let out a snicker. "Are you ALLY? Are you sick?" he asked with mock concern. Alex glared at him as they got out a banana and a yogurt to eat for breakfast.
"That's not enough food to keep you running!" Mr. Hicks snatched the snacks out of Alex's hands and replaced them with four eggs. "THAT'S protein Ally. It'll keep you strong and energized."
Alex gaped at the eggs. "We have to leave in like, two minutes! I can't MAKE breakfast!" they groaned. They quickly put away the food and bit into a granola bar. Stuffing it in their mouth, they headed for the door. "C'mon Alex! Let's go!"
"Bye Mom! Bye Dad!" Eric called as the twins headed out the door. As the door slammed behind them, he sighed in relief. "Encounter one: success."
"Huh?"
"We fooled them! And they're our parents! We're all set!" he exclaimed.
Alex shrugged. "I guess so," they said unenthusiastically. "What class do... I have first?"
"Math, with Ms. Baron. She's strict, but cool. Jen and Rory are in that class too, they're on the basketball team with me. Or should I say with you? Whatever." Eric frowned as he walked to the bus stop. "Who do I have?"
"You have Social Studies with Mr. Fraiter. Talk to Jesse and Sam." Alex passed a revised version of the schedule to their brother.
Eric grinned excitedly. "This is great! It has the teachers, classes and what to do on it!" he exclaimed. "It's like a real life cheat sheet!"
"Yeah, it should work well," Alex said proudly. "It shows just what you need to know. It shows that today, you have Math, Science, Language Arts, and-" They stopped in the middle of their sentence and they read and remembered what the final class was. "Shit. We're screwed."
Eric looked at his sibling. "What's wrong?"
"Gym," they said with a petrified face, "is the final class."
"I can just fake doing badly right?" Eric asked. With a deathly stare, Alex shook their head and lightly snapped Eric's binder strap. His face fell. "Oh."
Alex started to panic, shaking their hands and stimming. "What are we gonna do, what are we gonna do, what are we gonna-"
Eric quickly noticed his siblings reaction and grabbed his hands. "Hey... It's okay... We'll be alright..." Guiding them through slow breaths, they slowly walked to school.
"But what will we do?" Alex asked after a while. "It isn't like Alex Hicks can just opt out of gym, right?"
"I certainly wouldn't be if I was me. But as you, they probably don't even care," he replied.
"Wow, harsh much?"
Eric rolled his eyes. "You know what I mean! I can just... say I'm doing homework, or an extra-curricular activity."
Alex sighed. "Okay, maybe that'll work. I still don't think it'll go well though-" they quieted down as they grew closer to the school, "-at all Eric."
"Don't worry so much! It'll be fine!"
"You having an attitude like that is exactly why this will fail," they hissed.
Eric rolled his eyes once more before pushing Alex away. "Go see Rory. Everyone there with her, you can hang out with."
"Talk to Sam. Ask him about his manuscript, it'll keep him busy," Alex told Eric as they walked away.
Eric grinned as he walked to Alex's friends. This month was going to be amazing.
