"Your a werewolf, Donovan."
Arlee mumbled, her hands warm on my own. I was only just wondering what she had been yelling at Cole for when she said those words. The words I had been dreading to hear ever since I had been attacked.
My feet were glued to the ground as I replayed her words in my head. A werewolf? There's no such thing. Then again I just watched a wolf turn into a human.
I turned to Cole and Andy and they both nodded. I felt my knees start to wobble.
"How can you tell?" I questioned, wanting them all to burst out laughing and say it was just a joke. Arlee pointed to my leg, cringing slightly.
"We heal faster than a normal human would," She explained and pointed to her healed abdomen and face that was bruised yesterday at school. "There is still a chance you wont shift, Eric may not have had long enough to get a lot of his venom into your system, he may have just got a small amount in, just enough to heal your leg. Only the unlucky ones get to be like us." She jerked her head towards Andy and Cole and gave me some time to process what she just told me.
I still might not be a werewolf. I don't know what horrifies me about being a different thing, and not a human. But this little bit of hope Arlee has planted in me made me feel much better.
"So, you are all werewolves?" I asked, looking at Cole and Andy who were still standing by the doorway, watching us carefully.
Cole nodded, "That's what brought us together." He answered and glanced at Arlee, hurt clear in his eyes. Their argument must have hit something deep inside him.
Arlee looked up and met his gaze, bitting her lip, holding back another rant. To save her regretting it later I asked the one question that was coming to the surface of my mind.
"Are you guys even related?" They all shook their heads
"Not even close." Andy muttered, trying to take a step towards Arlee, but she held her hand up, halting him mid-step. She turned to me, worry scribbled over her beautiful face."What do your parents know?" She asked, squeezing my hands again. Arlee hadn't been awake when I called Harry and told his what was going on, not the truth, obviously.
"They think I'm at a mates house and I stayed over at theirs last night. But I have to go to school tomorrow or they will get suspicious." I replied and Arlee nodded, mumbling that she had too as well.
I looked up at Cole and Andy but they were watching Arlee like hawks. I frowned and when I twisted my head back to her I knew why.
Arlee was staring at our hands that were still joined. They were shaking.
"Oh no." She whispered, letting go. "Quick, outside, NOW!"
I froze, my whole body was shaking. What is happening? There was a sharp pain that shot through my head, as if something was trying to get out. I felt my blood run cold.
This was why Arlee had freaked out, this could have happened while she was still out. I understood now.
"Donovan!" Arlee screamed, grabbing my quaking arm and ran for the door. Andy was holding the front door open as we bolted out and into the clearing the house was on. Arlee let go of my arm and stepped back. I missed her warmth already.
"Arlee," I gulped as my whole body started to ache. "Arlee, tell me what's going on."
She had tears in her eyes and her face was sickly pale. "Arlee-""Remember who you are, you have to try to remember." She said, folding her arms tight into her stomach.
Just then, agony wrapped itself around me and I screamed. My face met the grass as I fell over. There were tiny white dots all over my vision as I convulsed on the ground, pain slicing through my bones.
When I tried to look up at Arlee, I saw her sobbing, rivers of tears gushing down her face.
"Remember who you are, Donovan!" She yelled and I pushed my eyes tightly closed, begging the agonising pain to stop. It felt as if all the bones in my body were breaking over and over again.I screamed out once more but no noise came out. My face was wet with sweat or tears, I didn't know.
"Arlee! Don't go near him!" I think Cole shouted as I felt warm arms wrap around me. They smelled smoky and like the woods. I have never smelt anything like it before. The smell weakened as I felt the arms being jerked from my body.
There was a scream and it felt like my ear drums would burst. Everything was too loud. I wasn't human anymore.
I was a wolf.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My eyes glided open and I saw the woods in front of me. I was lying on the grass. Slowly, I got up and stretched.
"Donovan?" Someone whispered and I twisted towards the voice, my teeth clashing together to form a steady snarl.
It was a girl, she had hair like fire and endless dark pits for eyes. I could get lost in them but I shook my head and concentrated on her smell. It too was like fire, it had a smoky hint to it and a touch of pine. She smelled so good. I had never seem her before but I felt like I knew her.
Her face was soaked with tears as her eyes followed me where I went. There was a young boy with wavy black hair, one hand was holding her arms and the other was around her waist.
For some reason my heart clenched at the location of his arms on the familiar girl.
Beside them was a middle aged man with a scruffy brown beard. They all looked tense, as if waiting for something.
The man took a step towards me and I growled, baring my sharp teeth. I wanted to run, run somewhere where no one could find me but I didn't. The girl seemed too familiar, as if I knew her in a life before this.
She pulled against the boy's restraints on her and wriggled around in his bulky arms.
"Let me go!" She yelled, tugging harder but the boy was strong.I wanted to help her so I stalked closer, snapping my jaws at the boy, his eyes going wide and frightened. He was scared, good.
The girl stopped pulling and stared into my eyes.
"Let. Me. Go." She snarled and I cocked my head. She sounded like an animal. I heard her whisper 'sorry' to the boy behind her when he didn't release her.Suddenly, the red haired girl dug her elbow into the boys rib cage and push back out of his arms. He moaned and fell to the ground, grasping his middle.
A growl emitted from the girls throat that sounded even more like an animal.
And then before my eyes, she was.
