History
300 years ago, the War of Heroes was fought, also known as the War of Darkness. Creatures of darkness had roamed the lands for centuries since the fall of the Monolyth Empire. They preyed upon humanity like wolves among frightened sheep. Vampires and necromancers ruled vast domains. Werewolf and wendigo tribes wandered the wilderness, devouring entire villages. Other monsters preyed upon humanity that have been best left forgotten to the mists of time.
This changed with the coming of Marcus the Great, the Golden Emperor. With his army of mercenary comrades gathered over a lifetime of adventuring, and the great Guilds he had allied with, they fought town by town to push back the legions of desolation. Slowly they liberated these towns from the centuries long reign of terror known as the Long Night. But one unfortunate night, their crusade awoke something ancient, powerful, and angry.
With the combined might of the guilds, soldiers from the surrounding four kingdoms and Marcus' Army of Heroes, this mysterious force of destruction was defeated, but at great cost. Those heroes that remained became the Heirarchs, the inner circle of a new empire that would protect humanity from the roving creatures of the night.
This has continued for nearly three centuries with the utmost success, until now. Now the darkness at the edge of civilization grows longer, and more terrifying. A cold bitter wind howls through the endless depths of ruin and nothingness that is the Wastes, the giant cemetery of a fallen civilization. Only vague rumors still exist about the place, and about its ultimate fall. A force only known as Desolation destroyed it once. When the wind drives in from the west, it howls and screeches as it shrieks between the crumbling structures of stone and metal.
And within the depths of the endless darkness of this place, a faint light glows...
