“Dad?” I asked unsurely. I mean, I had a right to be unsure to whether he was my dad or not. He had supposedly died in a car crash when I was one year old. I guess he hadn’t actually died.
“That’s right, sweetheart. Aren’t you happy to see your old man?” He asked, smiling.
“You’re supposed to be dead.” I blurted out. I immediately regretted speaking.
My dad’s smile was replaced with a scowl. “Is that what she told you? I didn’t think she hated me that much. I guess I have done some regrettable things, though. Tell me, how much did she tell you?”
“You mean mum?” I asked.
“Yes, I mean your mother.”
“Well, she told me that you died in a car crash when I was one and that was really all she said about you. She didn’t like talking about you.”
“I don’t mean about me, princess, I mean about you.” He said patiently.
“I’m sorry, I don’t think I understand.” I say, wondering what on earth he was talking about.
“So she never told you?” He said, speaking mostly to himself. “I thought that when you became a teenager she would tell you. That’s the agreement we had.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I said, trying not to lose my temper. Luke always joked about my red head temper.
“I have a few questions for you, sweetheart. One, do you know what you are?”
“Excuse me?” I ask him, confused. “I know what I am. I’m a human.”
“Question number two,” he goes on, ignoring me, “have you met Kalash?”
“Kalash?” I say. “What type of name is Kalash?”
“You really don’t know do you?” He says in a realising tone.
“Know what?” I ask. “Look, if you’re not going to tell me anything, can you let me go?”
“You don’t seem to know anything, but then of course you could be lying to me.” Dad said, speaking to himself again. “I have decided. If you know something, you had better tell me by tomorrow morning, or else someone you care about will go bye bye.”
I gasped. I had never met my dad before this, but I didn’t think he was evil.
“See you in the morning, sweet pea.” He says as he leaves the cell.
I lay face down on my bed and started crying. I was never getting out of here. My dad would never believe me when I say I don’t know anything. I started thinking about all the people I would leave behind. My mum. Luke. The cheerleading squad. I would even miss Lachlan.
I sat up. I couldn’t give up yet. Dad can’t keep me here forever. I looked out the small window and saw that it was night.
‘I had better get some sleep.’ I say to myself as I lay down on my hard bunk and drift off to sleep.
